Part of the reason why I don't watch a lot of narrative content on broadcast TV is that the encoding is usually atrocious. I hate banding.

i’m not
perhaps I wasn’t clear, that was exactly my contention….by “thru no fault of their own” I was referring to viewers (users)

just like i wouldn’t blame a person for not getting a vaccine in my analogy, if they were not informed by public health beforehand to get it, and even if they had been, let’s say live 300 miles away from a teaching hospital without having a car and finding it very difficult to take time off from work for such a long road trip by bus, etc.

lots of hoops to jump thru for something intended for mass inoculation, as an aside, fortunately getting a measles booster (if indicated) is not fraught with any of these encumberments

Well watching at the Chinese - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post16373877 (P3 SDR), or at home on a decently calibrated, excellent television in a dark room at a good bitrate can result in one seeing an acceptable picture. But that requires a whole lot of hoops for a consumer to jump thru, which he/she may not be able to achieve, and thru no fault of their own, for a product which is intended to bring satisfaction broadly to a large population of viewers.

An analogy might be that you can have a superbly effective vaccine for a disease, but in the end, how good is it really if the masses it is intended to immunize (and satisfy) have to firstly know and then have the ability to go to a teaching hospital (UCI, UCLA, USC, etc.) where a highly qualified person must administer it, rather than the consumer simply driving locally to any clinic or local community hospital close-by and having any healthcare provider give it to you, no fuss no muss.

Even if people didn’t optimize their televisions as Tom Cruise and Christopher recommended in their PSA - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...m#post16116265 , that movie was/is still watchable if the masses of viewers do nothing but turn their TVs on to the content.

Hopefully tonight’s episode 4 of GoT will be more efficacious (I haven’t watched it yet).

Yes, that's why people complained that they couldn't see anything, missing the Starbucks coffee cup.

I didn't know they had those during the dragons era.

I didn't have any issues with any of the episodes so far. Streamed via HBO app on my ATV4K. I didn't watch Episode 3 on premiere night though, I was on a tour in Colorado. All the others were on their broadcast night.

Picture looked fantastic for all of them, but then again I know a calibrator guy.

HFR (High Frame Rate) ... we love high velocity frame per second, 3D slow-motion, very dark moving pictures (Batman, GOT, CatWoman, Alien flicks, ...all that jazz cabaret smoking music).

Just for fun:

That's the episode (#3) who had many viewers complained about the darkness of the action scenes. They couldn't see what was going on, but then again they didn't know a calibrator gal.

as the astute colorist, Fernando, seated next to you with the Spanish accent later indicated, many people (for that matter, in all aspects of life’s endeavors) have to work within budgets

plus Alexis’s (the panelist with the light colored jacket) project might not have had as much of a difference in aesthetics if he had had access to Dolby Vision v.4 - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...y#post16322429

The answer is…..yes.

Also, in GOT, there is no artificial light sources. All moon light, sun light, flames and torches.

The fact that Kris, you and others got decent images kinda blows to bits the theory offered online as to the culprit of the issue being the colorist having screwed up the grade.
