It was 4k laser projection, my friend is the projectionist and he always lets me know when DCP comes in 4K, the same theater now projects Super Mario Bros, and he told me that one is 2K.
I will ask him again if he is absolutely sure.

If a movie plays in a 4K laser venue doesn't always mean a 4K DCP. In my country there is a cinema brand which uses 4K laser tech as well. Not all movies shown there were automatically 4K.

Yes, I am aware of that, I am telling you that Super Mario bros has a 2K DCP, but my friend says it was a 4K DCP, he is the projectionist in that room.

Most likely the studios don't feel it's worth the extra money to put them on 4K discs. They cost more to encode, produce, etc. With 4K still being a very small percentage of sold discs, it probably it's going to change which is unfortunate.

They should have phased out each new format a couple years after the new one. Studios continued to release Blu-ray & DVD Combos, which led to DVD still maintaining a majority share of disc sales. With no "push" from studios to upgrade to the next format, most folks who don't even know the difference, stuck with the cheaper and still plentiful format. When 4K discs began to release, they still continued DVD, and Blu-ray/DVD combos, once again giving no incentive to upgrade. Most every day folks have no idea what Blu-ray/4K are in comparison to DVD, even though most now havbe 4K TVs.

If they continued to make players backwards compatible (they are), but phased out the previous format, while slowly lowering the MSRP of the new format, they would have forced folks to move to Blu-ray. They waited too long, and now with the proliferation of streaming, most people wouldn't make the jump if they were pushed.

They shoudl just go to 4K/BD exclusive combo packs. No more BD on its own editions.
