I'm a little annoyed that Sony made it virtually impossible to see this film the way Lee intended. Regardless whether or not the content and execution of the film is good, I would like to at least give HFR 120 a chance. Sucks that Lee and Sony can't compromise half-way into provide a faster frame-rate version that'll reach out to as many theaters as possible.

Oh well...

Honestly what I saw of a supposed 120fps presentation didn't impress me in the slightest - I'd even have to call AMC out and claim the projector/server wasn't outputting the HFR image ... at all

EDIT: they had technical errors with the first showing that I was at, and what I witnessed was indeed the 24fps version - that manager I talked over this after the feature was an utter clueless moron.

That's probably why (according to Film-tech thread) Sony didn't pull the trigger on a wide HFR release as they had planned. Not only is the movie bombing, but also, there's added risk of bad HFR shows. There are ten versions of the movie, so there ARE versions going from 120 to 60, to 24.

Just the way it goes, some Dolby Theaters are showing it in 120 fps Dolby Vision 2K, try to find those.

Not mentioned on film tech forum, was this factual due diligence on the part of WB for a previous HFR theatrical motion picture (Hobbit 2)…..

DCP test packages were sent out to theater operators. Glitches arose, most of which were resolved at the 2nd PlugFest. The studio got projector manufacturers actively involved, e.g. for one technical issue all manufacturers ended up providing instructions on how best to flip between traditional frame rate and HFR content.

Even within less than 10 days prior to the premiere the studio was dedicated to resolving isolated issues at local commercial theaters, e.g. informing theater operators as to the correct setting or configuration and referring them to the manufacturer for expedited guidance, replacing bad boards, etc.
Resulting in a successful widespread distribution (there were only several lost shows, mostly isolated incidents having to do
with missing keys or one off issues)….

Thanks Penton, it's very clear between this and the last minute change of release date (from Veterans Day to a super crowded WE) that Sony just took a dump on this.

There is a way towards redemption, if the care is there:

Otherwise, why even brag about Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk during the Keynote at mipcom 2016 in Cannes…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_gHCxXxAE0#t=19m

Step up Kaz….is Sony….Can-do or Can-not?
Take 'full advantage' of the Ultra HD Blu-ray spec!

Yup, other releases from smaller movies all suffered big time next to Fantastic Beasts (great movie btw). It's insane how much it bombed. Meantime, it's going to end up with about 25 million in China, and it releases in most OS territories in January & February, hopefully, it makes its budget back.

So yeah, like Penton said, let's hope they at least redeem themselves with a HFR option on the UHD BR.

I had planned on seeing it this weekend in 120fps, but it's already gone from the Cinerama Dome.

Yeah, replaced by Fantastic Beasts. This release has been really puzzling. Kudos Sony.

But they're showing it in 70mm... Even though it was shot in 2.8K.

2.8K anamorphic uprezzed into a 4K master should transfer very nicely onto 70mm.

I'd be VERY surprised if that happened. But at least the intended 3D aspect will be there. That's important with this film

Most everyone feels that way (silently, without saying it) but the idea here is to encourage the content creator to offer consumers the 60 fps version….not to be pragmatically submissive to the studio.

Positive vibes man.

According to IMDb (if reliable) 3.4K was used, regarding Fantastic Beasts.

I saw that too but the weird thing is that 3.4K Open Gate means bugger-all when shooting anamorphic because the 2x lenses will only cover the squarer centre portion of the Alexa's sensor. That's not just me saying that, as Arri's own white paper re: the Open Gate mode states the following:
Quote:

So while this means that they can put 3.4K on the tech specs the actual sensor width (as far as K's are concerned) that gets captured on Open Gate when using 2x anamorphics is gonna be in the same ballpark as the actual 2.5K res of the Alexa XT's 2.39 anamorphic sensor mode.

It's actually coming out in the US in February on BD/UHD, saw the date somewhere. I hope we'll get details soon on the versions in it, but I can't see it being anything other than 24 fps.
