Hey, can anyone advice if the copy sold by Target includes the 3D Blu-ray? It doesn't seem to specify. Only 4K UHD and 1080p BD.

If most Best Buys in the US only got 2 copies, then it seems like most Canadian stores got none. It was only listed as in stock at a couple Toronto area stores, none of which were very conveniently located for me. So I ended up going to a nearby independent store that's part of a locally-owned chain with a few locations around Ontario. About at 10 minute longer drive than the nearest Best Buy (which is about 5 minutes), but truth be told I should probably be supporting them more often anyway, as they're the last brick & mortar store around with a respectable selection.
They had a single copy, fortunately going for the same price as Best Buy. My Oppo UDP-203 should be arriving this week sometime, so I'm eager to see what my TV can do with this apparently reference-quality disc. The film itself looks as dull as a doorknob, but the novelty of UHD Blu's first 60fps disc is too much. Plus, I want to continue supporting UHD/3D/BD combo packs in the hope it becomes more common. Regarding higher frame rates - it is fact that the only reason productions went to 24fps on movies after silent films, was to save money. 24fps keeps things in budget. A slower frame rate is too jittery but it has been the standard for film and that is what we are all used to seeing. However... if they had been shooting at 30-32 fps since the beginning, going to 24 right now would drive everyone crazy. Personally, I love a higher frame rate. Video is shot higher and I like that smoothness, that clarity, that lack of blur on quick movement but I've worked and edited in video. It's all what we get used to and some just don't like or can accept alternatives or change. Doesn't make them wrong or right but thinking outside the box is always healthy.

Decided I couldn't wait til it was dark so I hung up an old comforter to block out the light and popped this disc in. The hype is real. The SOE effect isn't so jarring, just like HFR 3D on The Hobbit you adjust to it pretty quickly. Clarity and detail are really good, colors look great, the only small issue I could see so far is that Chris Tucker's suit has some shimmering on it at the very beginning when they're outside the hotel but that's probably my TV's fault. Movie is OK so far. EDIT: holy crap, Joe Alwyn is British? Would NEVER have guess that.

I've noticed one of my BB stores only gets 1 UHD copy in for a lot of movies.

A great example of how good the 60fps is when the football game is playing and theres a kickoff and all the players are running down the field with zero blur on the running players. Watched this scene on the 1080p blu ray and it was a mess on my tv.

I was able to get this at Best Buy and Arrival in 4K. They only had two copies of this and none of the slips were perfect of course. I still don't get why they are not stocking more of the 4K editions because it seems like every release week you see people having problems getting what they want. Last week I had to order John Wick 4K off Amazon because Best Buy didn't get any in. Besides all that cant wait to watch this tonight

Finished the movie, it's not the trainwreck critics made it out to be but it definitely elicits more of a shrug than anything else. I actually think Lee directs the film well, he relies too much on the first-person camera but combined with the HFR it has an oddly disconcerting effect that really puts you in Billy's head. (Moonlight kinda does the same thing, and is less successful in this respect but is overall a slightly better movie.) It's just that the story itself isn't really all that great. Kind of a pointless 100 minutes that feels longer because the movie has no idea what it wants to be. Oh well, at least it gave me a chance to hear Destiny's Child's "Soldier" for the first time since like 7th grade haha
The UHD is great, that's the most important thing. I'm watching the 4K bonus feature right now, I don't think it's been HDR-graded and you can tell it looks harsher than the movie itself. As far as the HFR experiment, I think it worked, and I hope more filmmakers use it. James Cameron, you're up next! |

Can anyone else confirm if the 4K Sony Ultraviolet redeem on this title is working okay? I just redeemed it and it isn't porting over to UV, Vudu, or any of the other retailers. Sony tried removing and re-adding the title and I tried various linkings and un-linkings and neither worked. They said it might be a problem with it being a new title and to check back on it tomorrow. Wondering if anyone's had any luck getting it to work.

I love how he went from saying that he wanted to shoot the first Avatar in 48p, to then saying he was going to one-up PJ by shooting the sequels at 60p (something he'd already done for the T2 3D show where he somehow managed to build a beamsplitter rig to shoot in Showscan 3D), only to then see the tremendous backlash The Hobbit's HFR received and change his tune to "I'm just going to do the fast action scenes in 48p." I'm very curious to see what he decides on.
I was able to take the bus up to NYC to see Billy Lynn in the 120p 3D Ang Lee intended. It's too bad the 4k UHD format couldn't have written 3D into the spec from the get go as I would've loved to have "the whole enchilada" of both 60p and 3D, not have to choose between one or the other. Nevertheless, it's nice that they included the 24p 3D blu. I wish studios would do that more often with native 3D productions like X-Men: Apocalypse and The Martian: Extended (which wasn't even released at all on 3D blu). |
