But my question was:
what if we enabled motion interpolation on a UHD like this one which already plays at higher frame rate (60fps instead of the usual 24fps)? Would we end up with simulated 120fps as a result?

We’ve got the spec, we’ve got the compression, we’ve got the disc capacity.
Can you imagine all of the Marvel movies or Avatar @ 60FPS?
Insane. BIG BUCKS for the studios to commit though. 3x the rendering workload.
I’m so over the ass-looking panning shots and judder. Immersion killers. They’re all clinging to things and budgets of ol’. I demand better. I demand true 60FPS.

Not saying yes/no to the second question, but as to the first I've previously tested the Motionflow settings on my TV with the 60i Spears & Munsil motion patterns (which are output as 60p) and even the Smooth setting - which usually creates a shit-ton of motion artefacts with 24fps - copes very well for the exact reasons stated upthread: there are lots more frames there so it cuts down on the 'guessing' that the motion interpolation has to do.

Will have to try Billy Lynn's with motionflow next time, in fact I haven't even watched it in HDR because the last time I saw it was when I had my SDR 4K TV, and it still blew me away in terms of PQ.

Finally watched Billy Lynn yesterday afternoon after having the movie unopened since Thanksgiving 2017. Should've definitely watched it sooner!

I thought it was going to be an average, forgettable war movie with the 60FPS presentation as its only redeeming factor. Thankfully, it ended up being better than I expected.
[Show spoiler]I would've done without two fight scenes in a row between the soldiers and roadies, however. The second time it happened made the most sense in the context of the film, but having them brawl twice in less than ten minutes seemed odd.

It's a really bleak picture in many ways, and (IMO) very unconventional. I'll have to check out the source material one day. From what I heard, the satire and dark comedy are much more pronounced.

In the hands of a lesser director, it would've suffered. But Ang Lee brought a lot of heart to the movie and definitely accentuated the positives.

The presentation was pretty awesome as well. Lee had a clear vision and didn't fall into gimmickry all that often. Not saying it's anywhere close to the spectacle of Dunkirk or Hateful Eight's theatrical presentations but it was unique, and it makes the movie stand out among the countless other Iraq/modern war films that were released around that time.

How anyone can ever watch this movie and come up with something positive to say is beyond me.

The picture quality is insane. That’s it.

Yeah, obviously. Still, it’s so bad it’s hard to see why anyone would enjoy it.

But, yes, opinions.....

I imported this day one for the novelty, and to the day have only watched about 5 mins to see what it looked like.

I understand it is hard to understand the message of a movie when it possibly classes with your world view. It's sad... but at least you could try.

It didn't clash with my worldview, but it still isn't a good movie. Around 40% on both RT critics AND user reviews pretty much nails it. There's 40% of a great movie in there, but it meanders and has no real spine to say what it's trying to say.

Ad the 48 frame version was so laughably awful looking, I had to watch it in proper filmic 24p.

This is Ang Lee’s masterpiece if you ask me. A profound, deeply felt, and intensely compassionate film. The HFR really gives it a striking realism and immediacy that enhance everything Lee does. I love it a lot.

Doesn’t go against anything. I’m not a sensitive crybaby. It’s a movie.

Picture quality was superb yes but the audio was just as good.

The half time concert was incredible, as were the brief shootouts.

Would love to see more 4K/60fps experiments.

There is no 48 fps version. It's 60fps on the disc. And I like the film, form and content.

The way it used intense realism and sensory stimulation to convey
[Show spoiler]PTSD as well as convey the almost surreal reality of American "everyday can be Thanksgiving" opulence, football, military, owners box, prom king and queen culture vs the distressed middle class home life with its somber, earthen burlap look, and being "back in the world" vs deployed in active combat somewhere...
was pretty damn well done imo. The subject matter played the look of the film like an instrument. It simultaneously feels wholesome and uncensored at the same time.

It made a part of my own country that I've only ever really known through film and TV seem real and relatable for the first time.
