This somehow flew under the radar for me. I just picked it up after learning it’s in HFR. I’m about an hour into it and so far, it just looks unbelievable. Definitely feels “real”. When that limo pulls into the arena it literally feels like you’re standing there watching it
Couple thoughts though if this is the future then acting and filmmaking has to change. A lot of it so far is so “actory”. Clearly a movie set with people reciting lines. Acting styles have to change too. Billy’s mom, that style looks terrible in HFR. Also, what’s up with peoples skin? It’s like they all have skin conditions. I look like a superstar with perfect smooth complexion compared to them. Was it the harsh lighting needed to film at 120fps? Either way it’s just unreal, I do like it. I like my 24hz/24fps, but this does seem like a possible next step, they just have to adjust a lot before it becomes on par with the same “sucking you in” factor of 24p. I’m excited for Gemini Man and will be buying it day one just to support this direction as I find it fascinating |

You're seeing so much more resolution which is why things like their skin stand out so much, I don't just mean spatial resolution like 4K but motion resolution, i.e. those 60 frames per second are retaining information from frame to frame to frame that would be blurred out by traditional 24fps with a 180-degree shutter. This also makes it slightly easier for the compression on disc to retain this information as there are now many more frames that are similar to each other than not, which is the cornerstone of consumer interframe encoding.
The half-time show when all the fireworks are going off and 'Destiny's Child' are performing is one of the closest feelings of 'being there' that I've ever had with home video. |

It’s more than just the resolution - Ang Lee chose not to apply any makeup to the actors because it would be too visible in the movie thanks to the tech. So you’re seeing those actors au naturale.

I hate to admit this but I personally felt that the most interesting scene from this film technically speaking was the Thanksgiving dinner. It shows a clear connection to other of Lee's films including The Ice Storm and Brokeback Mountain, and the higher framerate adds a new vision to a concept which the director is already familiar with.
Other than that I honestly cannot say that I'm any interested in HFR films. I'm a complete sucker for 24fps for feature films and have been so for as long as I can remember. Did try out the 3D version on the other hand and while I'm no big fan of watching movies in anything but two dimensions neither I must say they did an excellent job with this one. The composition is very well thought out and depth is always apparent. Would honestly recommend that version rather than the 60fps one. |

Watched this again in the run up to Gemini Man, see if my thoughts have changed any and although I watched it in full fat HDR this time rather than SDR conversion it's still astounding. The amount of detail and immersion is so real it's almost TOO real, I legit felt queasy for the first half hour because of my motion sickness kicking in but it settled down after that. And I still like the movie too, I even got a lil' bit emosh when Billy and his sister are hugging at the end.

I never even bothered with the 3D disc, I sold mine out of the US combo pack. It's not that I don't like 3D, I love it, but it's too much of a crapshoot on my TV as to whether it'll look good or whether it'll be plagued by crosstalk so I'll usually opt for the more consistent experience e.g. 4K.
Would LOVE to see this and Gemini in actual HFR 3D though. |

I've watched in both formats once each but that was a while ago. Whilst the 3D was solid, the 4K probably offers more of a "novel" experience what with the frame rate. I just found this to be such a weird movie that isn't quite one thing or the other.

I still think the way it sells sensory overload and PTSD at the halftime show is incredible. At every turn, there's a strong meta-conceptual relationship between the use of HFR and the actual movie, which never got much acknowledgement or appreciation.
