You better hope that you or a family member won't need to get hospitalized any time soon, whether it be because of a heart attack, stroke, etc. Because hospitals are currently at capacity due to the number of people who require medical attention right now due to the Coronavirus. And it's only going to get increasingly worse.

Hardly anyone around here is taking it seriously. It seems like there were more people out than usual beyond just the grocery and big box stores. The parks and streets were pretty crowded and a lot of people were standing around talking to each other in groups. Social distancing doesn't seem to be in effect even though it's been advised. And locals on facebook are constantly posting racist or otherwise insensitive messages towards China and mocking both the practice of social distancing and the people who want to get tested. A lot of locals just seem to find it an annoyance and aren't modifying their daily routine other than not going to places that are closed.

A few things should work well before a vaccine:
1.) Hydroxychloroquine +/- Kaletra shows very promising signs of shortening recovery time. The word "cute" has been thrown around, but I wouldn't go that far. This should be available to people now through compassionate use, and others over the next few months through trials. If FDA approves it for Coronavirus, then it's good to go. 2.) Antibodies - This one is big in my opinion. Lots of places are working on an antibody serum that when given to the masses, should be able to provide a temporary immunity (weeks to months) against COVID-19 (think of the movie Outbreak). The serum will probably be done in a couple weeks, but the testing process will probably mean it won't be given to people till Summer. 3.) Trials for remdesvir are underway, and I think some may be able to get it through compassionate use. This is another promising anti-viral that appears to shorten hospital stays. Germany's death rate of only 0.34% is not an anomaly, but rather they are just testing more than everywhere else. Over 160,000 tests a week and the capacity for more. The U.S. death rate is 1.34% right now and is going down every day as testing capacity increases.
So while rapidly rising cases is not good news obviously, the silver lining is that the true death rate from this will probably not be very significantly higher than the common flu (which is around 0.1% in the U.S.), although still higher of course. How much higher remains to be seen, but it's nowhere nearly the 3.4% they were claiming, and in Germany, where they actually test a lot, it's 10 times lower. I think the rate in the U.S. will eventually creep down to what Germany's rate is, once testing supplies are sufficient. |

I signed a paper agreeing to the work at home conditions today. Kind of hope it doesn't come to that.
I wonder if this would be a good time to try online dating again. I'm perpetually single. Eh, probably won't bother. I wonder how South Park will almost surely portray it. |
