Well the hospitality industry is well and truly ****ed in the UK now thanks to Boris‘ decision to close all pubs, restaurants, bars and, thus, hotels.

He was basing his decision purely on a software model predicting the effect of the virus on the overly-burdened NHS, yet I’ve seen no software model for the effect of hundreds of thousands of job losses and business closures his decision has now created...roughly 9% of our workforce.

Most businesses in the hospitality industry don’t have insurance cover for ‘forced closure’ so the potential for all these proprietors and all their staff to become skint and then homeless is vast. The shit’s really gonna hit the fan when the looting and civil unrest starts happening.

Nice one Boris.

That won’t cover nearly anywhere near the full workforce, nor the hospitality industry. It’ll not only be difficult to implement, but also difficult to sustain.

Right, so everyone moaned at Boris for not shutting down the country, with hashtags like #herdimmunityismurder and #boristhebutcher trending on twatter, now people moan at him for shutting everything down. The hashtag #boriscannotwin would be rather appropriate here.

NOT that I'm making light of the dire times that the hospitality industry is facing, but it's one of any number of entertainment-related sectors that will inevitably be hit when social contact is deemed to be public enemy #1. Pretty much anything that takes place outside of our homes that isn't strictly essential for us to exist is getting shut down, either taking the decision for themselves like the Premier League and EFL did or the government is doing it for them.

But of course this payment of wages is not a long term measure, as it's not intended to be. So what happens after that is the unknown quantity as to whether we can see off this thing or whether it'll keep coming around like flu and lead to these periods of lockdown when the Chancellor will keep having to get his mickey mouse money out to keep people afloat. Once we get a vaccine then life will, believe it or not, return to some state of normalcy (or what passes as normal for us humans ) but for now then there's no magic wand that can be waved, this is a new situation we're facing so we're all literally having to take it a day at a time.

So until people are rioting in the streets - and let's be honest, it's not like we Brits need an excuse of some virus to do that: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14436499 - I'm siding with hope rather than fear.

NY may be on lockdown but the owners of the commercial building where I work have no plans on closing it down completely - someone has to come in to do maintenance checks and upkeep. I've been deemed an essential employee by my employer because I handle security so I'm still employed (for now). My question is, am I going to need a special pass or ID just to enter the city? None of my coworkers seem to know.

We can survive this. We survived the Popeyes chicken sandwich shortage of 2019.

you couldn't tell it where i work. yesterday, we did more business in 12 hours than a normal day where we would've been open for 16 hours. and it wasn't people panic-buying, either. we had a LOT of people coming in buying stuff for their yards; more than the usual amount of general contractors coming in picking up big orders and placing big orders; and just more business in general than usual.

and the consensus i got, when i asked, was that since most of them were staying home from work, they didn't want to just sit around doing nothing. so our business is profiting a good bit from it.

That's great to hear sk33tr! I believe that is the difference between keeping businesses open and mandating a complete shutdown.

what's weird is they put a sign in the breakroom that says...

"PLEASE PRACTICE:
SOCIAL DISTANCING
NO MORE THAN 2 PEOPLE GATHERED
NO MORNING/EVENING MEETINGS"

we're a customer service business (duh). so how are we supposed to practice social distancing if we need to talk to customers? or they need to ask us about something? or want to show us something? or need us to show them something? granted most of our customers don't show too much concern over it; but there are a few that show up in masks (i guess they don't read anything put out by the cdc) and gloves and don't want you to physically hand them anything; "just set it down and i'll pick it up". uh...i just handled it so me setting it down for you to pick up doesn't do any good to stop the spread of.....anything. but...whatever...

and no more than 2 people gathered? a good bit of us go to lunch around the same time every single day (usually a group from morning shift and a group from late shift). we eat in the breakroom as we're not allowed to eat anywhere else in the store. so how's that supposed to work?

the no meetings part i don't mind, lol.

and they've got us wiping down all the registers, credit card machines, keyboards, mice, product scanners, monitors, counters, and phones every 2 hours. with the amount of people that have been coming through the store, every 2 hours probably won't help if they're trying to stop the spread by contact. within 2 hours, we can have upwards of 50+ people use one single credit card machine. or 10 of us could use any 1 of the phones (of which there are many, in our store) before they're wiped down.

Theaters are closed here in SC too. I don’t really care. I have an ever growing backlog of films at home to watch spread across from Blus to Prime Video to VUDU to Movies Anywhere to Disney+ to Netflix so my problem is I am spoiled for choice and can never seem to choose anything to watch at any given time. I should do what my brother and his girlfriend do and get a randomizer App. Put in some titles of movies I haven’t watched yet and watch whichever one wins the shuffle.
