This is how quickly this can spread, and why we need to take this seriously:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/intensive...11249405.html.

"Professor Hugh Montgomery, director of the Institute for Human Health and Performance at University College London, told Channel 4's "Dispatches" that the virus is three times more infectious than the flu, and therefore spreads much faster and wider.

"Normal flu, if I get that, I'm going to infect on average 1.3, 1.4 people ... by the time it's happened 10 times, I've been responsibly for about 14 cases of flu," Montgomery said.

This figure comes from calculating 1.4 to the power of ten, which yields 13.786.

"This coronavirus is very, very infectious, so every person passes to it three, now that doesn't sound like much of a difference, but if each of those three pass it to three and that happens in 10 layers, I have been responsible for infecting 59,000 people."

This figure it from raising three to the power of ten, which yields 59,059."

This attitude is why many more people will die - people are more concerned with the economy than saving lives. As usual with humanity, money is king. Estimates say up to half the country could end up being infected with this, causing up to 2.2 million deaths in the US alone by the worst-case scenarios. And yet people are more concerned about the inconveniences and economy. I worry about the economy too. It's going to get bad. But just saying we should let it rip through the country and take whatever victims it does is, frankly, disgusting. People say this until it's one of their own friends or family members that is affected. Then it's "why didn't they do more to protect us?"

By the way, even those who have mild cases can suffer lung damage long-term. Just because the majority of people are recovering doesn't mean their lives are back to normal. Smokers have even higher risk of long-term lung damage.

New York is a disaster. 20,000 confirmed cases today, 13,000 of which are in NYC. So basically, you get into a crowded subway, consider yourself infected with the virus. With those kinds of numbers in a crowded city, you don't stand a chance.

New York is officially doomed!

I was small and stood out like a sore thumb so I was easily bullied. I dropped out as soon as I was allowed to even though I liked learning. I got good grades too, other than when I started falling behind due to missing school to avoid bullies. Did summer school one year not due to grades but because I missed too many days, and got an A that summer. Sadly I don't have too many fond memories of school, other than a few nice teachers and my first girlfriend, who was one of the few fellow students who were kind to me.

But I guess for those that have some good friends, it must be sad to suddenly just not see them any more without proper good-byes.

Fear-mongering? Not at all. My "don't panic" gif was to add some levity actually.

We really don't know what the effect of COVID-19 is and how many deaths it may really lead to. A potential concern with the economy is that it could lead to many more deaths, long term, if the economy collapses and we have tens of millions of people out of work due to businesses going out of business.

Well I agree that's what makes this situation scary. If we all just go back to work in 2 weeks, and let everything fall back to normal, it will just continue spreading. But I agree we can't stay shut down forever. We of course do have to consider the economy. We need to make compromises in our activities. But people aren't doing that (some are but many aren't), which is why we have the lock downs. Many won't do anything that's an inconvenience. So what are we to do? If the hospitals remain overrun as they are currently, there will also be many more unrelated deaths just because health care will suffer. Look at the shortage of ventilators and masks. We need to control this thing.

And yet there are a lot of places that are locked down or in shelter in place, but people still go out for reasons other than what they've been asked to.

Well exactly. But that doesn't mean we should just throw our arms up and give up. Specifically because many even now aren't doing what they should, that's even more a reason why we need to take extra precautions like with the lock downs. Because we can't trust people to do the right thing on their own. People are more concerned with "will I get it?" than "Do I have it and could pass it to others?".

People still murder people and we still have thieves but that doesn't mean we should legalize it just because we can't stop it and people will do it anyways.

We still have to try and contain this as much as possible. The longer we can help contain it, the longer the hospitals have to prepare and get more supplies, stores can get re-stocked, etc., so that if it does spread out of control, either now or if it comes back in the fall/winter, we will be better prepared for another round, until such time that we can get some effective treatments or a vaccine out.

Here's a good read on a couple of approaches to combat the virus. Kinda long, but lots of good info in there.

"Summary of the article: Strong coronavirus measures today should only last a few weeks, there shouldn’t be a big peak of infections afterwards, and it can all be done for a reasonable cost to society, saving millions of lives along the way. If we don’t take these measures, tens of millions will be infected, many will die, along with anybody else that requires intensive care, because the healthcare system will have collapsed."

So hopefully it's true that the curve can be flattened in a matter of weeks. But then there will still be restrictions after many controls are lifted, such as on large gatherings, that will likely last until a vaccine is found, in order to keep R<1 (infection rate). I wonder what that would mean for sporting events and concerts, running races, etc.

Can you believe that I posted the above post an hour ago and since then, it soared another 3,000.

This cannot be real. Does NY alone really have almost 30% of the amount of confirmed cases that China has???

Ok, someone please give me a reason not to panic....

Good article. Everybody should read it.

As the article says, "What the Next 18 Months Can Look Like, if Leaders Buy Us Time". Sadly, time is expensive. But the cost is even greater later if we don't address this properly. From the article, "Every single day we delay the coronavirus, we can get better prepared. Conclusion: Buy Us Time."

It's all about buying time right now. Too many people don't get this.

An increased level of testing is going to result in identifying more infected people especially those in such close proximity as NYC. It's not a reason to panic.

If you haven't already, you should read the below article I posted a little while ago.
