Unfortunately, I completely disagree that we won't get to 100,000+ deaths here in the U.S. due to COVID-19. Even people who are younger & have no pre-existing health issues are getting sick & dying from this. And, a lot of people are NOT taking the shelter-in-place seriously & are still going out and socializing in large groups, etc. This type of stupid, selfish behavior by these f#%#tards ensures that the virus will continue to spread. With a clueless leader who claimed coronavirus was a "hoax" early on, what the hell did people expect was going to happen?!

We won't reach that number. I think some people are just defeatists for the sake of being defeatist. Even Italy has "only" had 10,000 deaths and, up until recently they were #1 in the world in terms of numbers. What's freaking people out are the number of new reported cases being blared by CNN on a daily basis but what people still haven't grasped is that testing positive is NOT an automatic death sentence. There will probably be 500,000+ positive cases by the time this hits a peak - scary number, right? Out of that, even 50,000 deaths in the US seems unlikely. \

One odd thing I've seen around the areas in NYC where I work. It's an affluent neighborhood - lots of old money and plenty of new. But 95% of the residents (it's easy to tell a resident from a worker who commutes from the outer boroughs) are walking around like nothing is happening - including parents with their children. No masks, no gloves, nothing. Lots of cute kids riding scooters with their mothers or fathers in tow - dilly dallying without a care in the world. Everybody else is decked out for WWIII. Weird.

I decided to make the trip out to Sam's Club today(45 mins). It's been 18 days since my last visit so it was time to get some things. Pretty much every frozen item was limited to 1 item. They had plenty of water but no TP or hand sanitizer. It was a very somber experience. I got what I needed and got out. Took the dog as well and had planned on taking her to the park but it was closed.

The Food and Drug Administration has given emergency approval to a Trump administration plan to distribute millions of doses of anti-malarial drugs to hospitals across the country, saying it is worth the risk of trying unproven treatments to slow the progression of the disease in seriously ill coronavirus patients.

There have only been a few, very small anecdotal studies that show a possible benefit of the drugs, hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine, to relieve the acute respiratory symptoms of Covid-19 and clear the virus from infected patients.

And health experts warn the drugs’ well-known side effects could become more commonplace with much wider use. In particular, they say, patients with existing heart problems or taking certain drugs such as anti-depressants that affect heart rhythm are at risk of a fatal episode. Experts recommend screening before the drugs are prescribed to prevent drug-related deaths.

"The concern really is if we’re talking millions of patients, then this issue of drug induced sudden cardiac death is absolutely going to rear its ugly head,’’ said Dr. Michael Ackerman, a pediatric cardiologist and professor at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.

Long-term use of the drugs also is associated with a form of vision loss called retinopathy, but the use of the drugs to fight virus in an infected patient is only for a few days. The FDA’s emergency authorization does not cover longer-term use of the drugs to prevent the coronavirus infection, a practice that has become more commonplace as doctors have prescribed the drugs "off label'' in response to the pandemic.

Went to Walmart this morning. Meat aisle was pretty well stocked - 1 per. So I went to the frozen fish freezers and picked up three packages of frozen Tilapia. No restriction on how many I could buy. Plenty of TP - 1 package per restriction

Our meat isle was fairly well stocked as well. I picked up a corned beef that I’ll throw in the slow cooker tomorrow. I think now that the limit restrictions are in place, you’ll see TP slowly start to re-appear again.

Good to hear. I need to go grocery shopping at some point this week and was worried it would still be a complete mess getting what I need.
