I've run over 50 marathons and ultramarathons during the past decade, including two 100-mile race finishes, but my fastest marathon time is 3:59 and change. I got my sub-4-hour and I was a happy camper. It's been a while since my last marathon, because I had a ruptured appendix in 2018 and a colon surgery in August of 2019, but I've got my mojo back and I'm ready to run one nonstop right now if I could register for one.

I'm bummed out now, because all of my races are being canceled. I was supposed to run a trail marathon in late April, but they closed it down and deferred our registrations to next year. I have a 50-mile trail race scheduled for September, and I'm expecting that to be shut down as well.

In March, I hit a new monthly mileage record of 256 miles. I run four days a week, and I've run a half marathon distance, at least, for all four days of the week for the past two months. I need to back off on the mileage now, since I've hit my goal weight, but I still keep running long, because it's the only fun thing that I get to do outdoors now with the COVID-19 stuff.
Everybody on social media keeps talking about how much weight they've gained during the social distancing quarantine, but I'm turning into Jack Skellington.
Sorry that your races are cancelled right when you are getting back into it after the operation. I've done a lot of races the last 3 years so, while I'm bummed about it, I need the break. I race a lot and maybe too much.

Coronavirus unlikely to diminish with warm weather, National Academies of Sciences panel finds

A panel convened by the National Academies of Sciences reported to the White House on Tuesday that the novel coronavirus is unlikely to wane with the arrival of summer, though there are many uncertainties remaining.

Right now, I'm not worried about speed or pacing, and I run just for the fun of it, because I'm happy to be running again in the first place. I've become decently fast just because of my mileage, but I won't be chasing personal records at certain race distances for a while.

I miss the races right now, though, because they're a rare social outlet for my introvert self. Trail races and ultra races, in particular, are like family reunions.

I do find it interesting they don't track real numbers for beds needed for coronavirus patients; those numbers are all projected unlike the deaths which has both real and projected numbers. Looking at the overall US numbers though, the site's data is projecting 106,408 beds being needed as of today, but there are less than 400,000 listed as being infected to date. Something seems off with the beds needed projection.
Despite limitations, scientifically thought-out models are no worse (arguably safer) than only relying on (unless in a critical life and death situation) in vitro experiments or apparent anecdotal observations with regards to response to various medical therapies for COVID-19 (e.g. hydroxychloroquine, Kaletra, etc.) without a proper clinical trial for proof - https://www.fiercepharma.com/pharma-...point-clinical )

Another model going around the professional ranks is CHIME….https://annals.org/aim/fullarticle/2...uring-covid-19

That is unacceptable. They really need to be shamed into respecting the 6 foot rule. I know that with all the walkers out, that they probably worried about joggers coming up behind them too close. I either announce my presence by "on your left", or "runner back", or usually I just skid my shoe on the pavement to make a noise so i don't have to say anything. But I would never pass within 6 feet of them. A couple of times I even turned around to avoid people and took a different route. Fortunately people here are generally very respectful of the social distance, unless of course they are under 25.

I feel more at ease in a mass street race setting, where it's more impersonal. The more people the better. Same for trail races too. At the Bear 100 last year it was awkward being there an hour before the start, not knowing what to do with myself, while most everyone else was being chatty in groups. I really felt out of place. But I love trail races, any races really. Hopefully we'll be able to run in a few this year. I am optimistic for those, but not the street races.

Same here. Slightly longer days with (significantly) less pay but I am glad to still be working. Sitting at home wringing my hands and burning up my savings (I don't dare to check my investments) while wondering how I will pay the government back (you all don't think this holiday is free do you?) would be even more stressful than what I have to deal with now.

The warmer and more humid weather will certainly help. The article is not refuting that. But true it's not going to wipe it out on its own, not by a long shot. Everyone will need to follow the social distancing guidelines until this is under control.

And with the warmer and more humid weather happening, people won't be able to help themselves and go outside. Any nullification of the virus may, in fact, be matched by the number of people who ultimately say IDGAF.

I certainly hope not. In many areas of the country the weather is more pleasant now, for going outside, than it will be in the middle of July. Lived in Houston for 7 years and I hated summer weather. When it's warm AND humid many will want to retreat to the comforts of AC.

Sadly, there will be thousands more. The curve flattening means new cases. But sadly, out of those who have already tested positive (419,975 in the US currently), tens of thousands more could die. That's sadly a brutal fact. So we will still see more record days ahead as those currently infected either pull through or don't. Currently, out of the resolved cases in the US (37,228), about 38% have died, and 62% recovered. If 38% of the 419,975 end up not recovering, that will be 159,590 deaths. That's just based on reported cases of course. The last few days have hovered around 35%-38% death rate out of those who are tested positive - but keep in mind, many who tested positive got tested because they were sick. So that 38% number doesn't mean 38% of those that get it will die. Most who get it will get through with mild or moderate symptoms at worse. But many of those that have tested positive were already very sick or had already died before getting tested. So out of those that have already tested positive, 38% may die if the numbers continue as they have been.

There's no way it jumped that much in a day. I think that website just entered the info wrong. Let me look into it further.

You're right. Looks like a mistake. I think that's just the number of tests. There's only 2,318 positive cases.

Yep, that site screwed up. They entered the total number of tests performed as that total number of cases. I'll see if I can contact them to fix it.
