26 million people have filed for unemployment in 5 weeks...it's time to open back up the economy. I've said before how if this continues its going to have long term health consequences, it's something that must be taken into account.

However, reopening the economy too soon poses other unpredictable risks. If a second wave of the virus occurs, the economy would most likely have to be shuttered again, meaning even more severe economic pain.

In fact, Mr. Autor, the economist whose work Mr. Navarro cited, expressed precisely that concern.

“We do find that prolonged economic distress contributes to increased male mortality, but we fear that Peter Navarro is drawing the wrong conclusion,” he said in an email.

“Continued economic disruption from repeated pandemic shocks and the associated economic uncertainty — which is likely what opening the economy too soon would deliver — seems more likely to deliver higher despair-induced mortality than the V-shaped recession we are hoping to engineer by stemming the pandemic now.”

Meanwhile, any measures to slow deaths from the virus will have huge downstream economic benefits. Michael Greenstone, an economist at the University of Chicago, finds that even moderate social distancing will save 1.7 million lives between March 1 and October 1, according to disease-spread models done at Imperial College London. Avoiding those deaths translates into a benefit of around $8 trillion to the economy, or about one-third of the US GDP, he estimates, on the basis of a widely accepted economic measure, the “value of a statistical life.” And if the outbreak is less severe than predicted by the Imperial College work, Greenstone predicts, social distancing could still save some $3.6 trillion.

The UN just said yesterday 130 million people are being pushed into starvation and may die due to the economic impact of the virus.

That article is from April 8th, well before antibody testing was started and revealed that the death rate is far lower than was feared.

Yes, I'm sure you care so much about people starving. Over 25,000 people a day are dying of starvation before this. Could it get worse? Sure, but it's not just the virus that would be causing that. Conflicts and wars, insect infestations, and crop destruction, etc..are major contributors this year to the hunger pandemic happening.

It's not like it has to be one or the other when it comes to people going hungry. There is enough money available now to provide millions around the world with food, not to mention the amount of food we waste in this country every single day. So no, don't act like this is all the virus' fault. This has been an ongoing problem that could be greatly remedied if more people actually cared.

It will be opened back up soon and then we'll be in an even worse situation. It's a lose/lose.

The economic impact of the virus is not helping matters. BTW, I'm not the one making up this info and reporting it.

Am I the only one who finds it bizarre when people casually announce the death of their loved ones (due to the coronavirus) on social media? When my mother died, the last thing I wanted to do is ****ing Tweet about it.

Exactly. It doesn't matter if you're "healthy" if you're broke and get evicted from your home/apartment and your car gets repossessed.

I never understood this either. It's like they have no one in their personal lives to grieve with. It's very weird and quite pathetic.

Another thought:

How much of the 26 million is making more off of unemployment than they were from their employment? *raises hand*

I'm making $1100 until August doing nothing. I know people who *ASKED* to be furloughed (or wish they were) because of how much money we're making. Not everyone will be permanently laid off.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess you're 35+.

This is the new normal, like it or not.

Some people value attention in life over everything else, even the lives of people they supposedly care about. It's one of the greatest criticisms of the newest generations - z and the millennials.

This is making me think of the Gnomes episode of South Park.

Phase 1: Give everyone their jobs back and open businesses immediately

Phase 2: ???

Phase 3: Economic recession and health crisis resolved!!

My sister in law's sister is a perfect example. Their other sister is having major problems with drugs and going missing and she's posted her missing on FB. My sister in law was extremely mortified and embarrassed.

It's called being an attention wh0re. They need people to pat them on the back and all that shit. Same when people break up, they have to hurry to social media to get their attention.

Some people find it as therapeutic, a way to help it "sink in" that their loved one is gone. People deal with grief in different ways.

My Mom called me a few minutes ago with a story.

She was in a public restroom at a store this morning, washing her hands. A woman came out of a stall, started heading toward the sink, and said, giggling "oh yeah, I have gloves on.... I don't have to wash my hands" then walked out the door.

Another example of why this isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Just caught up on the Mayor of Las Vegas video and that lady is pretty nuts. She wants casinos opened but will offer no guidance on how they can social distance because its not her problem she doesn't own a casino. How is she a Mayor? I understand it is hard for people to know when to do what right now but she's just screams pure ignorance.
