I bet those trains are lucky to even get half a##ed cleaned once a day after more then likely thousands of already infected people have used it.
Short of giving everyone a bicycle there's nothing much they can do, if you need to shift large amounts of people around they're going to be close together.

Just saying that doesn't really mean anything. Coming up with an actual realistic alternative to move that amount of people is virtually impossible.

Default Those with vitamin D deficiency have a greater chance of Covid-19 complications.

Quote:
Researchers last week released the first data supporting this link. They found that the nations with the highest mortality rates—Italy, Spain and France—also had the lowest average vitamin D levels among countries affected by the pandemic.

Vitamin D is produced by a reaction in the skin to the ultraviolet rays in sunlight. Many Americans are low in vitamin D, but those with darker skin are at a particular disadvantage because melanin inhibits the vitamin’s production.

In 2018 a longitudinal study by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital looked at whether vitamin D supplementation had any health benefits, specifically in regard to heart disease and cancer. The overall conclusion was that it didn’t, for most people. Yet buried in the results was one that should have made headlines: Vitamin D supplementation in African-Americans reduced cancer risk 23%. How? Cancer cells develop regularly in most animals, including humans, as the result of toxic injuries or glitches in DNA replication, but a healthy immune system destroys them. There is evidence that low vitamin D levels make the immune system go blind.

Dozens of studies confirm that deficiency is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which disproportionately afflicts African-Americans.

During the 1918-1919 Spanish Flu pandemic, the Camp Brooks Open Air Hospital in Massachusetts, had the unique distinction of being an outdoor recovery unit. The mortality rate for patients there fell from 40% to 13% when they were moved outside.
Staying inside too much may be lowering vitamin D stores too much in some people, so get outside in the sun when you can or take supplements.

Vitamin D also has the benefit of combating respiratory infections, so it's definitely a good idea to supplement with it. Even doses well above the recommended amount is safe, as long as it's not extreme. Even doses upwards of 10,000 IU a day has been shown to be safe.. It should ideally be paired with magnesium (which many are also deficient in)

Can't get Vitamin D if it's overcast every other day. Today I woke up to 39 degrees and light rain.

Most people as they get older don't get enough Vitamin D from the sun, or their diet, so supplementing is important. Same with calcium too.

It's estimated that more than 40% of adults have a vitamin D deficiency (probably a higher percentage in the older adults since they don't get outside as much).

Quote:
Regular sun exposure is the most natural way to get enough vitamin D. To maintain healthy blood levels, aim to get 10–30 minutes of midday sunlight, several times per week. People with darker skin may need a little more than this. Your exposure time should depend on how sensitive your skin is to sunlight

Then why am I jammed packed in subway cars every morning, which was NEVER the case 10 years ago? And I do remember reading somewhere that the MTA claimed that the ever increasing subway delays and signal problems are caused by the significant increase in ridership.

So my conclusion is that maybe the subway service has just gone downhill as a whole and the MTA is lying about increased ridership as a cover-up for their crappy service.

EDIT- Found my answer. They basically cut down service in the last 10 years. I stand corrected! I know this article is from 2018, but I doubt service increased over the past two years.

You answered your own question, but when do local authorities ever blame themselves when things don't run smoothly?

Yeah, I've always wondered why I sometimes have to wait 15 minutes for a damn train during rush hour. MTA officials claim that too many people are holding subway cars, thereby delaying the service. Funny thing is that I was buying into that lie. If trains were running on schedule, there would be little incentive to hold subway car doors.

Analyst: No Virus Vaccine, Netflix to Flourish, Theatres Languish

Quote:
As local and statewide economies slowly re-open businesses in the face of a COVID-19 pandemic that has killed more than 50,000 Americans, movie theaters today (April 27) will officially be allowed to open in the state of Georgia.

While Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s order may be wishful thinking, the reality for movie exhibitors is far less rosy with staffing shortages, dearth of content and a weary consumer, according to media analyst Michael Pachter with Wedbush Securities in Los Angeles.

Pachter expects the 2020 box office to end down 47.1% from 2019 to $6 billion, and 2021 to end 59.5% higher than 2020. He expects minimal box office revenue in the current Q2, with ticket sales down a staggering 96.8% compared to the previous-year period.

“We think some areas may open in June, but we do not expect attendance levels to begin to normalize until there is a vaccine, or the end of the year at the earliest,” Pachter wrote in an April 27 note. “Studios have no incentive to release new movies until all theatres are open and will be reasonably well-attended, which is not likely until there is a vaccine.”

The analyst says there have been 62 movies either moved or pulled from the release slate, worth an estimated $7.2 billion. Of these films, 17 have not yet been assigned a new release date, worth an estimated $830 million. Of those, The Lovebirds, Scoob, and Artemis Fowl have been slated for direct-to-streaming.

The MTA, or, specifically, the NYC Subway system, has always been very poorly run. Getting around town on weekends was especially frustrating, with detours and service changes affecting most lines all year long. It's the cheapest way to get from point A to point B but you should always give yourself lots of extra time when traveling.

Why anyone still pays attention to Michael Pachter is beyond me. It's like getting stock advice from Jim Cramer.

Good time to reduce the meat portion on my plate. I get more than enough protein as it is. But I will hit Costco and Safeway to stock up my freezer (although it's a smaller fridge and it's not going to hold much).

The Tyson pork processing plant in my hometown of Waterloo Iowa closed, having close to 200 cases (which led to a spike in Iowa's numbers).

One thing I'm shamelessly exploiting right now is someone's willingness/availability to go out of their way to pick up free stuff. Been purging some bulky items out of the house. So far I've gotten rid of:

Two 42" TVs
Wall mount
Three-piece office furniture set
Two turntables with mixer and case
Ikea chair with footrest
Lamp
Three glass display cases from Ikea
