It's great weather in NY this weekend, it's no surprise they're out and about. Can only hold people down for so long.

No excuse. Stay home; that’s all people have to do. Not difficult to do. This pandemic would have been over had people done that. But because people refuse to do that simple task, it’s not ending.

Now watch, I’m going to get argumentative replies saying that people have “essential” tasks to do outside. Yup, picnicking in the park... very essential!!

People have a choice to make. Stay home as much as possible and put the health of others before yourself, or they can go do what they want to do. The lines are being drawn as we speak.

The pandemic is not going to be over until we get herd immunity. That would be at least 60% of the population, either from getting antibodies through infection, or via a vaccine. In either case it will take at least a year or two.

It wouldn't have been over yet even if people had stayed home. Are you telling me that you have not left your place since the start of this?

Yes, I’ve been working from home. I have no valid reason to go outside.

If people did indeed stay home, how can the virus spread then?

Speaking of antibodies, hearing about how 25% of NYers have antibodies during the recent tests is starting to make me feel that we’ve been overhyping this all along. Yes, many people were hospitalized and died, but I’m also feeling the infection rate is far higher than we figured and the amount of people with serious reactions is lower than we thought. Just a feeling.

I suspect many others are starting to feel the same way and that’s probably why many people are starting to go out now.

It's unlikely the virus will be gone anytime soon, if ever.

Are you telling me you haven't needed to go to the grocery store since this started?

Um there’s this thing called delivery... you may want to give it a try sometime.

Please stop justifying stupid behavior. In that picture that MifuneFan posted, people were OBVIOUSLY not grocery shopping. So please, spare me your nonsense.

I'm assuming you're referring to grocery delivery and not take out. Either way, not everyone has delivery services as readily available as you. However, someone still needs to pick and deliver those grocery orders therefore it's not feasible for everyone to just stay at home as you would like. Further, there just aren't enough people to pick and deliver groceries for all people even if they had and wanted delivery service. NYC, for example, has over 8 million people which would then require quite a lot of delivery people.

The virus is still going to spread due to people working and needing to go out for essentials. Those that are asymptomatic will not know that they're spreading it. However, from what I recall seeing is that a majority of the infections are now coming from within the household.

I'm not trying to justify a picture. You can't infer from one picture that everyone that leaves their place of residence are going out for frivolous reasons.

There's really no excuse for people avoiding all guidelines as shown in the picture I posted. You are allowed to go out, and get some fresh air/exercise, but when social distancing can't be maintained you are supposed to wear a mask. You're also supposed to stay some distance away from others. None of that is happening in that pic, and that's just a small example. This is only going to get worse in the upcoming months as the weather gets warmer.

A second wave is all but guaranteed at this point, which will of course delay any opening of the economy. It'll also force the city to enforce stricter guidelines and penalties. I could see a situation where the National guard are brought in during Summer months, which is going to really suck, but if it's necessary to keep our hospitals from being overrun again, then so be it.

If people acted smart now, they might be able to have a better time during the Summer but alas there's too many selfish idiots out there, and they'll only have themselves to blame when we're worse off in July/August.

Except there'll be no long term immunity - this will become a seasonal thing. You can get it every year. Covid is a type of coronavirus. The common cold is a type of coronavirus. You get a cold every year don't you?

Ya, ya, that's a massive simplification - but at it's core it's also true.

You're going off the assumption that "herd immunity" is actually a thing.

As I posted when I went to get my antibody test, the doctor and nurse were told that's not a possibility.

What happens if a coronavirus vaccine is never developed? It's happened before

Quote:
As countries lie frozen in lockdown and billions of people lose their livelihoods, public figures are teasing a breakthrough that would mark the end of the crippling coronavirus pandemic: a vaccine.

But there is another, worst-case possibility: that no vaccine is ever developed. In this outcome, the public's hopes are repeatedly raised and then dashed, as various proposed solutions fall before the final hurdle.

Instead of wiping out Covid-19, societies may instead learn to live with it. Cities would slowly open and some freedoms will be returned, but on a short leash, if experts' recommendations are followed. Testing and physical tracing will become part of our lives in the short term, but in many countries, an abrupt instruction to self-isolate could come at any time. Treatments may be developed -- but outbreaks of the disease could still occur each year, and the global death toll would continue to tick upwards.

Governor Newsom said it, so he thinks it's a thing. And Dr. Fauci is pretty confident about immunity lasting at least a few years, and so are many disease experts. This virus mutates very slowly, unlike the flu or cold, so that's not a bad thing either.

But heck, unlike many here, I'm a glass half full guy, so you have to factor that in.

The whole reason I got the damn test is because it was free and I figured it would help to know that I've had it already. They shot down all of my hopes with their reaction. They did everything but roll their eyes at me.

The poor doctor was pregnant, too. I can't imagine the stress she must be under.

Well you have to assume they are obligated to say those things because they don't want you to get false hopes and go around unprotected. After all, there is still not concensus about immunity and besides antibody tests are not 100% reliable.
