Millions is low balling it a lot... do the math yourself though if you want 7.8 billion people with a estimated infection rate by the end of the year at like 50 to 70% of the world population. with a 1% mortality rate and 50% of the world population getting it 39 million people will die. 1% mortality rate though is if hospitals don't get overwhelmed and its handled well like in south korea. Its likely overwhelm some hospitals and then its mortality rate goes up to around 6 % as seen in italy and iran.

A UC panel of experts estimated at least 1.5 million Americans will die from it, assuming no vaccine can be found in time. Their best estimate is also that 40-70% of Americans will contract it within the next 12-18 months.

These aren't even worse-case scenario calculations.

Thing is here in the UK the shit is beginning to hit the fan a little. Me and my partner are not the types to panic buy however things like loo roll, pasta, medicines are starting to get really hard to find. So even people with a brain in their head start to buy more than they need because you have no idea in a weeks time if you will be able to buy it again. You end up being forced to panic buy by the the panic buyers.

So he set up a podium in front of his house all by himself, set up all the cameras all by himself and was throwing his voice asking the questions to himself not the gathered media? It was no Skype update from home

I didn't say anything about the testing. He said that anybody that has been in contact with him in recent days couldn't have caught it because he has no symptoms. The Canadian Government continue to be one of the only clueless governments sticking to the narrative that it can only be spread if somebody has symptoms which was debunked ages ago. A major world leader spreading false information like that is very problematic. But back to the testing no he should not only get tested if he shows symptoms. Who cares if it changes nothing for him when the spread is what is the issue. It is known that some people will not get symptoms at all so as a leader of a country that has had a lot of contact with people in the days prior it should be known if those in contact with him should be taking necessary steps too (If they had any common sense they would anyway).

The Canadian Government has been by far one of the worst at handling this and so far have lucked into Canada not being hit hard. But it is only a matter of time and clearly nothing was learned from Sars when Canada ended up with more cases than the US and all of Europe combined. Again the false narrative that it only spreads if people are symptomatic is an issue. Refusing to restrict travel from hot spots is an issue. Especially with the US Europe ban meaning everybody will just fly into Canada and cross the border. But worst of all with the travel they can't even be bothered screening at airports and stuff like that. There have been people that have traveled reporting how shocked they were coming into Canada compared to other countries and just cruising through the airports like nothing is happening. Including people that had been to countries like Italy. While this whole thing is being overblown they should still be taking the appropriate measures. Especially in a country that has overwhelmed hospitals without even having to deal with a pandemic. Then on top of it all the Alberta government has decided this is the time for budget cuts to the healthcare system so a PC federal government probably would be handling this poorly too.

Churches should not have services tomorrow, and until further notice.
A good chunk of their congregation are elderly.

Garbage bags were in low supply at my Target this morning.
They had a few pallets of TP and paper towels in center isles.
People were over filling their carts with it, gotta love greed.
Like I said, there needs to be strict limits on essentials.

Let's just take a minute to look at the numbers. In over three months there has been just over 5,000 deaths. Majority of those are the Wuhan epicenter where it initially went unchecked and nowhere has shown signs of an outbreak even slightly close to that (Not even Italy where the majority of non-China deaths have been). Even including the Wuhan epicenter with the number of deaths in over three months it would take over 300 months (25 years) to hit one million deaths worldwide let alone in only the US. It has already slowed in China and with the right steps no other country will be hit as hard as that. That doesn't even factor in the impact summer will have on the spread and stuff like that. Not to mention that it isn't an annual strain so it shouldn't re-emerge without a source of contagion. As long as world leaders do what is necessary with few missteps from here on out this will be an afterthought before a vaccine even exists much like Sars which still doesn't have a vaccine because realistically they probably stopped even bothering with a vaccine. Basically don't fall for the hyperbole from the media scare tactics. The same experts would have been the same experts preaching the end of days with Sars, Ebola etc.

Yup. Ironicly they weren’t, and some of those diseases are worse! I live with someone who works in the travel industry that said this is hurting the economy worse than 9/11, that’s what the real tragedy will end up being.

I saw on Target's website that they mentioned limits of 1 per customer of some products, so I would hope they'd enforce that in stores too.

And yeah, I agree about churches. At least at places with a lot of cases (like NY, and WA) they should be closed for the time being., or at the very least have reduced service of some kind (limit the amount of people that can go, have people spaced out, strongly recommend people over 60 not attend, etc..)

Yep Ebola was the truly frightening one. Something with a morality rate of 60% that doesn't prejudice between the young and old or healthy and weak is the thing of nightmares. I hate to say it but it is a good thing the media didn't care as much about something happening in Africa based on what the media has done to the world economy with this.

If a pandemic ever wipes us out it will likely be something carried by a mosquito since we can't exactly ask them to self isolate.

You're shocked that a virus could travel half-way around the world so quickly when we (people) are travelling around the world in the blink of an eye? It's not shocking at all and why all air travel to/from china should have been banned until they got a hold on this virus.

What really angers me about this is it doesn't seem like a lot of US doctors are following treatment protocols that worked in China. Specifically, the combination of Tamiflu, and two anti-HIV medications among others has been shown to reduce the impact of the virus.

The otherwise healthy 32 year old physician's assistant James Cai, who got in in NJ, and sounded like death, thanks his connections to doctors in China with saving his life. His medical team here weren't following the treatment regimen there, so he engaged in a communication between China, and the US, and eventually got the doctors here to treat him with an anti-malarial, and anti-HIV drug, which helped him turn the corner on this thing.

Quote:
James Cai, a 32-year-old physician’s assistant, remains hospitalized Thursday at Hackensack University Medical Center, where he’s now only experiencing a cough and fatigue after 11 days of battling the virus.

“Fortunately I have the resources and knowledge about it. I would be dead and gone already,” Cai told The Post in a text message.

He credited several Chinese doctors with helping his providers here better understand the infectious disease taking over his body.

“Most medical providers here don’t know about it,” Cai said. “Medical providers need to communicate with Chinese medical teams.”

It was only with the Chinese experts’ encouragement that they agreed to perform a coronavirus test, he said.

When it came back positive, they recommended he be treated with the antimalarial medicine chloroquine and the HIV drug Kaletra.

“Chinese experts suggest to treat with medicine to slow the virus first. Don’t wait,” he said. “Definitely I would not be here today [without them].”

Cai said since he was otherwise healthy, he fears how those who are older will fare fighting the virus.

“I am young. [People who are] 40 years and above [will] definitely not be making it,” Cai said.

Flu and HIV Drugs Show Efficacy Against Coronavirus

Quote:
A combination of flu and HIV medications may be able to treat severe cases of 2019-nCoV, the new coronavirus that has emerged in China, according to doctors in Thailand who have been caring for infected patients. The team’s approach, which used large doses of the flu drug oseltamivir combined with HIV drugs lopinavir and ritonavir, improved the conditions of several patients at the Rajavithi Hospital in Bangkok.

“This is not the cure, but the patient’s condition has vastly improved,” Rajavithi Hospital’s Kriangsak Atipornwanich says of one 70-year-old Chinese woman from Wuhan, according to Reuters. “From testing positive for 10 days under our care, after applying this combination of medicine the test result became negative within 48 hours.”

Canada's first COVID-19 vaccine made in Saskatchewan is now in testing stages. It could take up to a year to complete, as of now, there is no timeline as to when it could be ready for human use.

Ebola causes mass hemorrhaging. I know in the 90s (yes the 90s, that should give one pause) the mortality rate was much higher. A much worse disease than basically a strain of the flu, albeit, one that is highly contagious (Covid-19). Talk with any nurse and you will learn that anyone can die of anything, depending on their own biology/health. But the “general” public is not likely to die from the flu, no matter how contagious, what kills people is the severity of a virus, not how contagious it is.

Don’t really care how much hysteria is being peddled here or anywhere else. A vaccine is coming down the pike from Israel as well. Talk to those in the medical field and get a wholistic view besides just focusing on the worst known cases, or even the best known cases. The damage to the economy is going to effect far more people.

I fault the airline industry. When there's a health crisis brewing, even if it's very early, people shouldn't be allowed to travel freely. Restricting travel to civilians doesn't necessarily translate to financial disaster for local economies - you're not restricting cargo or goods, just people. Grandma doesn't NEED that vacation now, the Smiths don't need to visit Disneyland next week - all of these things can be postponed. Hell, Mr. Corporate Salesman doesn't need to attend that meeting across the country in 2 days - these aren't matter of life and death situations. CLOSE THE AIRSPACE!

Went into Hone Depot, needed some light bulbs, got in and out quick, no lines.
Heck, plenty of cleaning supplies too.
Might have been some TP and PT but I did not check.
