I haven't heard anything from work yet, means they may not have heard or they're not sure how to disseminate the information to their huge staff yet.

Yeah, New York has been going down for the past month. But that's the thing, it took a whole month to get to where we are at today, and it's still not over. Early April, we were at our highest and if we open up too early, we'll be back at that high point in the blink of an eye. So that's why when NY reopens, it will slowly but surely.

Interesting how people are actually sad about staying at home. Back when our lives were normal, most people spent more time on their phones instead of going out and socializing. So I don't understand why all of a sudden, isolating yourself is causing people to become sad.

Not a generalization; it's the truth. This is how life was before the pandemic. People didn't give a crap about people around them, so staying at home shouldn't have much of an impact on them since you can continue fiddling with your phones at home.

Personally i find the comparison moronic and the fact it comes from a Director of the WHO; even more reprehensible as such. For a start, HIV is passed to others in a very specific manner and not comparable at all to how Coronavirus is transmitted amongst the population.

Can you imagine saying to countries, "Hey, you just got to treat each other like you have HIV and you might pass it along". It's not only fundamentally flawed because of the effects both longer term and short term of HIV on the human body compared to what we know thus far about COVID-19 and the immunity or resilience of younger people to recover from it.

Wasn't Flu or a Cold the go to Coronavirus comparison?

Doesn't surprise me. I knew somehow I'd be the subject of attack the minute I post something. Why do I bother? Maybe this thread should be renamed- "Let's attack MrHT. We hate him!"

"The problem with absolute thinking is that it causes pain and suffering in the life of the person who adheres to an all-or-nothing attitude in any facet of his thought process."

Right. So it's just like I thought - he compared it to HIV by saying that, in the future, we'll hopefully have learned how to control it but, just like HIV, it may never fully go away.

His exact words: "HIV has not gone away - but we have come to terms with the virus."

He says nothing about the manner of transmission although that's what you seem to have an issue with. He's specifically speaking about how we will deal with it and may look at it in the future. I'll admit that it's not the greatest comparison but they are both viruses and, tbh, being a part of the queer community, I've heard more than a few friends describe comparisons between this and HIV, especially how the public responded to it. Similar to COVID, HIV can have absolutely no symptoms. Similar to COVID, we have no idea how many people died of AIDS in the early days because, in that case, they were notated as "pneumonia" due to shame and fear.

Although HIV is not only an STI, the public typically thinks of it that way. In this case, think of a mask as a condom protecting you against the virus. COVID is obviously far more easily transmitted from one person to another but HIV/AIDS is far deadlier. Luckily, in 2020, people aren't dying from HIV/AIDS so long as they take their meds.

And, YES, I can imagine being told to treat other people as if they have HIV because most sexual health practitioners tell *everyone* that's sexually active to conduct sexual practices like the person you're having sex with has HIV. They want everyone to protect themselves. Thankfully, for HIV we now have things better than condoms to do that...but it took 30+ years.

So, as I said, not the greatest comparison but you also don't know the question that lead to that response. And, regardless, I *do* think it's valid. But I must admit I'm perplexed by your extreme reaction to it - as if it's personally offended you.

I almost never go out. Neither does my girlfriend or her sister. We're stay-at-home cats. None of us are "cel phone people". We're not that into ourselves. We just don't love being social with lots of people and crowds. But now and then we get together to go out for a pizza or something, or go shopping. Her sister likes to hit Target now and then just to browse around, or get her hair done. It's a nice break from being inside a lot. And work at least gets you out of the house, even if it's your least favorite place to be.

But now you're not even able to go out for small tasks, because it's no fun wandering around Target with a mask being paranoid of everyone, and you being in there wasting time means somebody else who needs to be there for supplies has to wait outside until you're done due to restrictions. No dining in a restaurant just to get together and talk and laugh. No gyms or theatres. You can't go out and do something even if you want to. So even if you normally stay home, knowing you can't go out even if you wanted to makes you feel imprisoned.

Just knowing you are being restricted, even if you don't normally go out, is enough to bring anybody down. Plus the constant barrage of doom & gloom numbers that is surely depressing to anybody who has a bit of humanity in them. Add to that the concern about finances, job losses, and what the world's "new normal" will be, and it's no mystery why people are getting anxious.

Plus sadly there's the "rebels" who simply want to defy anything they're being told to do, their own safety and anybody else's be damned, just to "fight the power" at all costs, whether it makes sense or not.

Again you are taking things way too personal. If you knew what I had to go through a few weeks ago in a thread on a board game site of all things, for absolutely petty reasons, you would know what being attacked is. People on the internet often disagree with each other. That's what they do. There are people in here disagreeing with some of my thoughts, but it's remaining civil mostly and I don't mind. People aren't being mean to you just because they disagree with some of what you say and post a differing opinion. People can be vicious on the internet. What's posted in this thread rates about a 1 on a scale of 1-10 in terms of internet forums and comment threads. Go read the comment threads on arstechinca to get a taste of how "civil" supposedly-well-educated adults can be online. It's disgusting how they are allowed to behave, since there's very little moderation over there. Or just read some comments on Youtube or Yahoo.

I've been to a few. We had one near where I grew up so I went once or twice when I was young. We have (or had) one a few towns away from where I live now, so I've been there a few times long ago. I'm not sure if they're currently operating - I think they closed a few years ago. They had three screens! You would pull up to the screen you wanted to watch and each movie was broadcast over a different radio station so you would tune into the one you wanted. You could just turn around to look out the back window and see the other screen if you wanted to and tune into that station.

Fun fact: They used to be an "adult" drive in theatre long ago. They played nothing but porn movies on them. And you could actually see one of the screens from a busy road as you passed by! Eventually they shut down long long ago and later somebody else bought it and turned it into a more family-friendly drive-in.

If people would just practice virus distancing and wear masks(finally coming around on those except on runs) the spread would plummet and lives would resume some sense of normalcy. So simple, yet so difficult for so many people.
