Public gyms like planet fitness are DOA unless proof comes out that this is all a hoax and truly at this point i wouldn't doubt it from what i have seen not just in our government, but around the world.

But regardless i can only laugh at the people who are now complaining about the sweaters, you know the guys who basically look like they were just hosed down after working out for ten minutes and then leaving their slime all over the equipment . My sister was complaining about it and i can see her side, but i also know some people sweat buckets when they work out and don't see anyways around it for these places. And the planet fitness type places, lol if people think they hire enough or pay enough for their places to be properly cleaned.
I invested about $12,000 in a work gym at my business, just 6 weeks before they closed the gyms down. I can't buy any of the equipment now (some of it I can, like free weights, but only at ebay prices), so I feel fortunate in my timing.

I don't think the risk is that great from sweaters or touching equipment. It's estimated that only 6 percent of cases come from surface contact. I'm sure people that go to these reopened gyms will be mindful of not touching their face with their hands and anyway having a separate towel for wiping off sweat will serve that purpose well.

But I wouldn't want to be a gym owner for sure. For one thing, people are scared to go and another many are and will be buying equipment to work out at home. And like you say their will be an additional cost in sanitizing throughout the day. It's going to be tough for them.

9 out of 10 people on unemployment are already making more than what they were making at work. How much better than that does it need to be?

If bills aren’t being paid, the government needs to step in and help. There was another stimulus on the table, but unfortunately it was blocked.

Is there a source to back up that 90% of people are making more on unemployment? I know it certainly applies to a lot of people, but 90% seems unrealistic.

I know at least 1 former co-worker from my last job has to work 2 jobs to feed his family so that unemployment check isn't enough for him.

I read it somewhere in the WSJ that I subscribe to, which would be the estimate if they pass the $3.5 trillion dollar package. Since it merely extends the $600 weekly benefits to next January and extends the same unemployment benefits as well, I don't think the estimate would be greater than what it is now. Maybe they overestimated it, I don't know. But getting $600 a week on top of unemployment would definitely put the vast majority over what they were making while working.

Are there a lot of people on unemployment who are not getting the $600 checks? Maybe the 90% was just those people that are getting them.

That stimulus package seems pretty unlikely to pass though.

Not in its current form at least. Especially with the latest job news, which was much better than expected.

That was me. I was making almost $1,200 more per month being on unemployment. Damn my work for opening back up.

I'm not sure if this is the same WSJ article you'e referring to, but it stated in its opening sentence that it's only about half of US workers that may be getting more.

Quote:
Roughly half of all U.S. workers stand to earn more in unemployment benefits than they did at their jobs before the coronavirus pandemic shut down swaths of the U.S. economy, a result of government relief that employers say is complicating plans to reopen businesses.

My girlfriend had her work-at-home hours cut from 40 to 24 at least 6 weeks ago, and has yet only collected a single unemployment check. Things went wrong for her and others she works with and they don't qualify. Somehow she got one check and has since been unable to file each week. They had to switch it over to work share for her to qualify, and though they supposedly have been approved weeks ago now, she has yet to collect a single work share payment, and of course that means she's been missing out on the $600 each week too from the federal stimulus. It's quite possible, and sadly likely, that she may not ever collect all these back payments she should have qualified for if her employer set it up correctly to begin with, or if she wasn't denied unemployment based on her supposedly being just a few hours over the maximum gross amount per week, thus claiming she "makes too much", which is laughable because she's struggling through all this now.

Lots of people are in this situation. Don't assume everybody is swimming in money all of sudden.

Yup, I hear you. My gym project is coming together slowly. Decent, basic equipment such as barbells, plates and dumbbells are extremely hard to find right now. It makes sense with the combination of increased demand and a decrease in manufacturing and supply personnel. Blows.

Gyms are getting hit hard by this. A lot of those class style places similar to Crossfit popped up around me in the past several years. Just my personal opinion, but they tend to be expensive and offer limited variety.Wonder how they'll make out. I do wonder if my wife and I would've went all in with converting our office to a gym if it weren't for the pandemic.

Places like Planet Fitness might be OK in the long run. Their business model literally relies on people paying for memberships and not showing up.

Sorry but that's an unfair statement. I have said many, many times that we need a balance - opening things up carefully, taking the advice of experts, and maintaining some level of distancing whenever possible. I have actually used the word balance in here many times over the weeks. The problem is some in here are speaking in binary, and saying we all just need to return to work as before and get back to life as it was since it appears the levels are dropping. We have some bar and gym owners ready to open full back up, with some owners in previous weeks literally hanging signs saying "no masks allowed". Is that responsible? Is this balance?

When we have posters in here saying "it's sad what qualifies these days as a pandemic", how can anybody defend that kind of statement?

No it was a more recent one. I'll see if I can find it later.

But it does appear that it's not 90% right now, so I stand corrected on that (see NY Times link below). I don't know how it was estimated to be 90% if the $3.5 stimulus was passed. Maybe they are increasing the unemployment benefit ceiling as well?

Most retailers in the Rep.of Ireland have re-opened their businesses to the public for the 1st time today in 3 months. Retailers, who have opened their doors today, have put in place new measures for allowing social distancing & hygiene in their stores. Over 100,000 people were reported to be queuing-up & doing shopping in Dublin City Centre since this morning.

Grandparents were allowed to do socially distanced visits with their grandchildren from today.

Irish Water have also put in place a 6 week hose pipe ban for the entire country to conserve water supplies for people doing increased hand washing & increased water supply for sanitation purposes in their homes during Covid-19 & because of increased temperatures from the recent warm weather in May causing droughts in some parts of the country. Hose pipes & powerhoses are not allowed to be used in people's homes during this period.

A new make-shift field hospital has been set-up at the University of Limerick's sports arena today as a way of easing pressure on acute hospital waiting lists within the Limerick area. The 68 bed facility can be scaled up to 84 beds if needed. The Intermediate Care Unit is catered for patients who are ready to be discharged from Limericks hospital system & for patients who have had been ill with Covid-19 but are now free of the infection. It is expected to be in place at UL's sport arena if a 2nd wave of Covid-19 occurs in Ireland. It will remain open until November 2020.

Irish Horse Racing meetings, elite swimming training & League of Ireland team training for European competitions have also resumed today.

Some shops in Northern Ireland have resumed trading from today. Although most of them will re-open for business from Friday.

Also N. Ireland made some good news today in reporting 0 deaths from Covid-19 for 2 days in a row.

Went back to work today after being on medical leave since April 1. They are checking temps now and there’s signs on the door that you need a mask but a few people today didn’t wear them and none of the Fed ex drivers did.

It’s becoming like that at my place of employment as well. Masks are essentially encouraged but not enforced.
