I live in the deep south, and masks are pretty much no where. I wear mine, and I get very strange looks because of it.

I went to Kohl’s department store yesterday to return a pair of shoes that I’d been wanting to take back for three months. It was now or never.

I was shocked at how many customers weren’t wearing masks...probably 70%. It’s not terribly surprising, given the fact that the folks who typically shop there are 1 or 2 steps removed from the clientele at Walmart, but disturbing nonetheless.

Meanwhile Oregon is one of eight states seeing a major spike in cases.

...what the hell is wrong with people?

Oh I see. Must be a typo then. What source do you use for WW data?

they have made typos before, they are usually very good at correcting them.

My ancient uncle on my mother's side just tested positive for it and has a laundry list of chronic health issues. I have a very bad feeling about this.

I use worldometer, but I'll sometimes double check against a state or country's own tracker to see any discrepancies. I've seen errors like this before, and sometimes they're corrected, sometimes not. They allow anyone to submit data to them, so it's possible some things get approved without proper checking.

there where definitely a few that had Covid parties but for the most part I don't think it is that they don't care. They just don't understand reality. when the media talks about asymptotic people, mild people, death is only for the old with preexisting conditions.... it is easy for people to assume their hopes are realities and that this is no wher4e near as big a deal as they should realise it is.

That is the issues with humanity (as highlighted in the story of Pandora's box). Hope is a double edged sword, it can keep you going when everything is dark and get you to the other side, or it can keep you going when everything is dark and lead you into deaths grasp.

At this point I think there is too much positivity and not enough reality for too many people.

I wish him all the luck and a speedy recovery. It is insanely dangerous for older people but it is not an automatic death sentence, you, your family and he have to assume it will turn out for the best until proven other wise.

Nebraska governor: Counties requiring masks ineligible for relief money

Quote:
The governor of Nebraska has threatened to withhold millions of dollars in coronavirus relief funds from counties that require people to wear masks. The order contradicts advice from the state's health officials and even the governor himself, who has publicly implored the public to wear masks when they go to stores.
Quote:
"Counties are not prohibited from requiring masks, but if they want CARES Act money, they have to be fully open, and that means they cannot deny service for not wearing a mask," Ricketts spokesman Taylor Gage told the newspaper.

Seems to be that way in NY. But obviously warm weather has nothing to do with. I’m pretty sure it’s a lot warmer in Florida and Texas and their cases are surging.

News reports are now saying that there has been a huge spike in the R number for Covid in Germany while it had recently relaxed some of it's restrictions.

It's current R number is at 2.88, based on a 4 day average, which is pretty bad to look at because they have doing extremely well in combating the previous numbers of infections from the 1st wave of the virus. If anything; Germany was pretty badly hit, along with Spain & Italy, with the 1st wave of the virus. I hope now that Germany does not have an sharp increase in cases coming in from other countries because it is a big part of the EU's main trading block along with France. Germany's authorities had recently re-allowed their own population to travel to other parts of Europe since June 8th.

2 regions in Germany have seen some sharp increases in local infections in Goettingen & North Rhine Westphalia.

An apartment block in Goettingen has put 700 people into a mandatory quarantine after police reinforcement was needed to maintain lockdown conditions yesterday after following orders from the local health authorities. Residents were put under quarantine in the apartment block on Thursday. 2 of those residents had tested positive for Covid on Thursday.

But by Friday; the number of infected residents in that block increased sharply to 120. It's an horribly alarming figure to think about in this day & age.

The head of the police in Goettingen said that 200 residents had tried to get out of the apartment block. The remaining 500 residents complied with the quarantine rules by Police. Some of the 200 residents attacked police officers in a riot whilst they left the apartment block. 8 police officers were injured with fireworks, bottles & metal bars.

In North Rhine Westphalia; 6,500 people were told to go into quarantine after 1,000 of their colleagues had tested positive for Covid in a German meat processing plant called Toennies. Translators for Polish, Bulgarian & Romanian workers at the plant were brought in by the local government to translate it's terms for a new lockdown. The local government premier had said that are 1,300 properties needed in total to observe the quarantine rules with local police officers & health officials helping out.

I'm hoping that it does not occur elsewhere in Germany as they have done some really good work in getting rid of the virus.

Yup, that's what happens when you ignore the rules, like that meat processing plant did. You screw up and lots of people have to suffer as a result. They just learned that lesson the hard way. However, the response was quick and quarantining that many people was the right thing to do. We'll see how long it will take to get back to the numbers from just a week ago. Of course NRW will see a rise in cases for a while now because folks spread the virus before they knew they were positive.

The high reproduction number stems from those recent outbreaks. Getting them under control is the key to getting that reproductin number down again.

Everywhere else in Germany daily infections have gone down. Here in Bavaria there were only 16 new cases yesterday and we used to have the highest number of daily infections, for example. So the focus is on North Rhine Westphalia now. I hope they can get this under control soon...

Edit: To put this in context. There were 687 new confirmed cases in Germany yesterday. But 549 of them were confirmed in just the state of North Rhine Westphalia. This goes to show what just one or two big clusters in one state can do. But it also shows that mitigation works if you look at the rest of the country.
