My dad has done off his rocker! My mom finally decided to take him out for a walk today after being cooped up at home for over three months and he was going crazy getting mad at everyone he saw that wasn't wearing a mask! I mean, yeah people should be wearing mask, but that's no reason to act like a complete nutjob about it. I don't think my dad can ever go out again...

In this case though, the label lies, so you would have no way of knowing. Those labels say they contain Ethanol/ethyl alcohol, but instead they contain methanol. The product is literally poison.

We're going to have to give people their freedom back eventually, otherwise there won't be jobs to go back to. Gov. Newsom is locking down counties, then opening them up (partially), then warns about locking them down again.

This is county-wide whackamole and not too different than the USA's 50 state whackamole. As long as there is intra-national travel on planes, trains, buses, or people gathering after getting out of their cars - its just going to spread.

Lock down vulnerable populations, lock down outbreak hotspots with contact tracing, but jeezus we can't really wait another 6-9 months for a vaccine because it will result in nationwide civil unrest or even armed social conflict (imo).

Stay home if u sicc, come over if u thicc.

No I don't think they're are going to shut down businesses again. There's no going back on that. But they can add more restrictions to them to operate. Newsom seems to be properly balancing the needs of controlling the spread and keeping the economy going. He knows that the shutdowns affect the poor and undocumented most and his stance has always been on protecting them.

The main hotspots off the top of my head for reopened businesses are bars and nightclubs. Otherwise as I've mentioned it's public transport, slum areas or anywhere migrants and poor live in crowded conditions.

My theory, using the forest fire analogy, is that these high risk housing hot spots will "burn out" and cases will die down like they did in New York. Although at higher level of course because of the reopenings.

If NYC stays fairly stable after reopening to the level of Florida, Georgia or Texas, then we'll know that it's because they've built up a decent amount of immunity among the areas that were among the most case heavy earlier.

I believe that in some of these neighborhoods in NYC hit especially hard that up to half of the population got infected. They say antibody tests show 22% had it, but that's citywide. It will be distributed unevenly and the fact that it would be higher in high risk zones will be good because the rest of the city will be protected from new spikes from these areas. Anyway, just a theory, but hope it's true.

I heard a variant of the burn through theory you're talking about from one of the talking heads on a business news channel.

I think it might make sense that wide swaths of the younger population are now getting the virus and not adding to the death or hospitalization totals.

But I don't think it makes sense for the older population and people locked in nursing homes without visitors. A lot of old people were scared ****-less by this thing (rightfully), I have older neighbors on my street who haven't even been outside since March. It would take a long time to burn through the older population, and I really really don't want to see the results of what would happen if it did.

If there's one saving grace, 2/3 of the people in the workforce are under 50, and an even bigger percentage are under the full social security retirement age of 67. You're an exception, bruce.

New York City Marathon will not take place this year, not surprised. Doubt we will see another large scale marathon event before next summer.

Assuming the "time and dose" theory (or study) is true, and that fomites aren't as big a risk as previously thought, I hope these elderly people become less fearful to venture outside as time goes on.

As long as the elderly don't live in a multiple family dwelling, and are protected from family members from prolonged proximity, then they will be fine.

Yeah I don't plan to draw social security until I'm 70 (8 years from now) and probably won't retire ever (at least until health or severe mental declines intervene). When you have a job you love, it becomes part of your life and you don't want to lose it.

Crap, I expected it. I was registered but glad they are giving free deferrals for any of the next 3 years. I want to run it once in my life, as I haven't even been to NYC and I would like to have a good reason to visit with my family.

As funny as that moniker is, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Joker is going to be just fine. He got the virus, but he didn't really "get the virus" like someone old with a respiratory issue did.

But then again given my record of predicting things on this forum, he might be flat on his back dead in two weeks time.

The real Serbian Joker, Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets, also tested positive, but has been asymptomatic in the week that's gone by since his test.

NBA player Nikola Jokic, a Serb who plays for the Denver Nuggets, has also tested positive for the coronavirus. He was pictured shaking hands with Djokovic at an exhibition basketball event in Belgrade this month.

NO! You talk about reality yet you don't bring up statistics to justify your fears. People who get covid have a 99% recovery rate. It is not a death sentence that you and others want to make it out to be

That is the issues with humanity (as highlighted in the story of Pandora's box). Hope is a double edged sword, it can keep you going when everything is dark and get you to the other side, or it can keep you going when everything is dark and lead you into deaths grasp.

At this point I think there is too much positivity and not enough reality for too many people.
can you show me where in my post I said it is a death sentence?

straw man arguments just make you look foolish especially if someone noticed my very next post from the one you quoted

as to the rest of your post it confirms what I said there are nearly (and possibly over) .5M people that have died fast in one of the most horrific way to die possible and if the final number is 1% that would be ~78M if we assume everyone goes through it. Yes statistically age is a factor (you should be more worried of dying if you are 80 instead of 30 but people of all ages are dying from this and the media likes talking of pre-existing conditions but none of us know if we fall in that category or not so why gamble? if you take a six shooter revolver and put a bullet in it and play Russian roulette you have a 5 in 6 chances of being OK, but the question is why play the game in the first place?

But it is not just about dying. Does spending weeks (or months) in the hospital sound like fun? how about getting some of your body amputated because the blood clots created by covid-19 caused the flow to stop in that limb? how about permanent lung scarring that will reduce how much you can exert yourself for the rest of your shortened life? kidney destruction that will require dialysis for the rest of your shortened life, still feeling from time to time like it is back where you can barely breath and feel exhausted even once you have recovered….

yes, if the highest guesses for people without symptoms (1/3) is right there is hope that there won't be anything wrong for the person that catches it.

but even that is more or less meaningless because
1) no one knows the long term effect even in asymptotic people, there are many diseases that create conditions in peoples bodies that only become serious later on.
2) if some of the research is right and https://medicalxpress.com/news/2020-...le-months.html you can catch it again in two three months with possibly a different outcome

The average age of infected has gone down, meaning fewer have more severe symptoms. A much larger percentage are Hispanics, which is the driving force behind these spikes.

They are a younger demographic and also less likely to seek medical care as many fear they will die at a facility (and die alone, which is the last thing they want, as Hispanics are very family oriented) or fear they may get reported to INS. Many if not most don't have health insurance either, so they would be worried about a huge hospital bill.
Maybe, maybe not there are many jurisdictions where it is the opposite. The elderly in care facilities already have beds and are easier to be cared for so they got the medical attention (including ventilators) in the care facility and were not counted as hospitalizations.

I hope the mother and father of the yet to be born child don’t live to regret the recklessness. As an aside, I wear a bicycle helmet at all times when riding or racing. I figure I’ve fallen directly on my head something like only about 1 out of 1,000 rides over the course of decades. Despite the low percentage, wearing a helmet will prevent a poor outcome like getting an acute epidural hematoma and having a neurosurgeon drill burr hole(s) in my skull in order to evacuate it.

I guess most offices are like mine where they are allowing us to continue working from home for a while until we're comfortable to return to the office. Even though people are allowed to return to office since Monday, I heard NYC subways are still empty.

where my Gf works they said not before Sept., where one of my friends works they did not give any dates but said they will be told what would happen 1m before anything changes.

Don't forget, it is very complicated for office towers, Distancing in elevators is impossible, what happens in case of a fire(drill)? they end to have communal spaces like kitchens and conference rooms where social distancing and cleaning after use would be hard, some might have nice closed offices and wide corridors but for most places it is open plan with at best half assed cubicles. where my GF works they now have two floors, my guess the options would be to take up two more floors or allow for a lot more work from home (i.e. work from home every second day or second week)
