There has been over 100 cases in my county. Over 1,000 in the surrounding area. No one has died. No one really got sick. They test positive. They quarantine for a few weeks. They go back to their lives. I don't get it. The overwhelmed hospitals, the respirators. And yes, people I work with, and know personally have contacted it, and the only thing they delt with was boredom of not leaving their home.

It doesn't add up.

1) they were lucky (for now, possibly - see #2)

2) there's a possibility that it affected them in ways that they won't know about until down the line

I think a majority of cases vary from mild nuisance to wiped out for a couple days. I don’t think anyone believes it’s a death sentence. The trouble with positive cases is that it could be spread to someone who has the medical issues to turn it deadly. And if that can be avoided, don’t we have the obligation to help avoid someone from dying when they didn’t have to?

Doesn’t add up how? The hospitals are indeed being slammed. This creeping sense of some bigger plot keeps popping up here and on social media. What is the goal of exaggerating or inventing a narrative of overwhelmed hospitals? Money? Swindling more funding to the hospitals?

So I wonder how much an effect the rerouting of the hospital data (bypassing the CDC) will have on the tracking site's data.

I don't have antibodies, which means I have to take extra care of myself. I'm borderline diabetic and have High Blood Pressure. I suspect my immune system is weak because I'm always getting half-colds, whereas up until a couple of years ago I barely got sick at all. Who knows how severely this virus will affect me if I get it. What I don't understand is how some people seem to be affected so badly that in some cases death occurs, while the majority of people who get it barely have symptoms. Plus now the virus appears to be hitting young people just as badly. 6+ months after this thing surfaced and they still don't know how to stop it? How hard are they working at it?

It can take years to develop a proper vaccine, especially if there's more than 1 strain of it, like I suspect.

An automatic death sentence? No.

A possible death sentence?

Also stopping it? Not right now. I however suspect the spread of it would be slowed substantially if everyone would:
Wear masks when they leave their homes
Socially distance as much as possible
Avoid leaving home for anything that's not essential

This is a completely new virus that we haven't seen before. It might have similarities to the flu but the way it attacks the body and having no immunity to it makes it a different beast.

This was talked about when COVID first appeared because some scientists felt we were due for a pandemic. We have been over medicating, more people living in subpar conditions, general health declining. It was the perfect storm of conditions for a new virus to show up and overwhelm us.

Until there is more investigation, I think the takeaway from those links I posted is that for those who have had COVID-19, it’s wise to still practice social distancing and wear a mask after recovery as one may not necessarily be ‘immune’ to the disease….something of which many might otherwise assume, like the person interviewed.

Of course, people like my sister-in-law who nearly died of the disease are likely more protected and for a longer period of time than others who’ve been infected and not been in ICU for weeks. I’d alo bet she has a boatload of neutralizing antibodies as well as, importantly, helper T cells lurking in the ready like a Special Forces team.

Sorry, wearing a mask is too uncomfortable and I need to go out and live my life. No can do...

In all seriousness, you're right. In fact, people don't need to be prisoners at home. You can go out, but wear a mask and keep 6 feet distance from others. It's not that hard! Yes, it is not 100% effective and people will still catch the virus, but I guarantee that the virus will not spread like the rate of Florida if people did those two things.

But there states which have hospitals report data directly to them, aren't there? That will be allowed to continue? If so, is there a list?

No that’s not what I meant. I guess I worded that post poorly, I was asking (for the sake of perspective) what do readers think has been the % success rate of vaccines, in general, (forget Sars-CoV-2 candidates) before the neo coronavirus ever came on scene, have entered Phase 3 and made it thru the end to be approved?

I am going to very ignorantly guess somewhere between 5-20% of vaccines that make it through phase 3 actually become approved to be used on humans.

Quote:
Interestingly, the POS (probability of success) to get from Phase 3 to approval was only 59.0%. This means that around 2 out of every 5 drugs that reach Phase 3 “confirmatory” trials still fail to win approval for the indication being investigated. Even when looking only at lead indications, still about 30% of drugs in Phase 3 fail to reach approval.

I wonder how many people are using beards as an excuse not to wear a mask.

Some of my co-workers re-use disposable masks over and over. Isn't that, like, not a good idea?
