7 day rolling average for cases in New Mexico is 160 so as long as the numbers at least stay static, restaurants and I'm sure a couple other things will re-open this week.

New Mexico is doing much, much better. Only 7.5 daily cases per 100,000 (levels not seen there since May), and well under the 10 per 100k that is recommended to reopen schools. The U.S. as a whole is at 15.5 per 100k, but that is down 28 percent from a peak of 21.5 per 100k, set 3 weeks ago. So positive trends in most states now.

A new strain of the coronavirus, called D614G, is currently making its way across southeast Asia — and Malaysian health officials worry it may be more infectious than even COVID-19. The strain has been seen in several countries across the continent and was originally found in a Malaysian cluster of 45 cases, according to Bloomberg Quint, which follows international news out of India.

Health officials say those 45 cases of D614G started after someone returned from India before completing his 14-day quarantine. Then, the strain was detected from several samples of COVID-19 in the Philippines.

Philippines Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said on Monday that the mutation is said to have a “higher possibility of transmission or infectiousness, but we still don’t have enough solid evidence to say that that will happen.”

The lack of evidence is something health officials stress, however, with Benjamin Cowling, head of epidemiology and bio-statistics at the University of Hong Kong saying that it might merely have a competitive advantage over other strains of COVID-19.

The strain “might be a little bit more contagious,” Cowling told Bloomberg Quint. “We haven’t yet got enough evidence to evaluate that, but there’s no evidence that it’s a lot more contagious.”

D614G is currently being studied in the Phillippines, where the outbreak of COVID-19 is highest in the region.

Back in July, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the U.S. government’s top infectious disease expert, said that a new mutation of COVID-19 could help coronavirus replicate more easily.

New simple rule - if you don't want to wear a mask when you leave your property, somebody else who believes in wearing masks gets to sneak up behind you and tase you.

Well the problem is that many people think you have to wear a mask outside at all times and that's simply not true. At least in most states. Is New Mexico the only state that requires a mask on outdoors at all times, not matter what??

When you have unreasonable rules, you won't have respect for them, nor widespread compliance.

Masks on face outside ONLY required if you can't social distance (6'). If I lived in NM I would do the same as I do here in California and other states with sane mask rules.

The virus is primarily spread indoors through prolonged close contact. Not outdoors nor through surface contact. We need to get our priorities straightened out but unfortunately it's difficult to police indoor private gatherings.

Only exceptions (and I've gotten push back on this regarding running outside from others) are swimming, eating and drinking. I even emailed our Democratic senator about it and he didn't reply, which is probably what his answer is.

So are you running with a mask on then?

I don't understand why people refuse to wear masks outside but don't refuse to wear clothes. During heat waves, I would love to walk outside naked but I would get arrested if I did that. So I respect the law and put clothes on. I don't throw a hissy fit over it.

Yeah I run with a mask on with mixed results, I'm sure the blistering New Mexico heat and the elevation don't help lol.

I think it's time to make not wearing a mask an arrestable offense. At least scare people a bit, would probably lead to more compliance.

Keep that in your state. Quite unreasonable to say the least.

I've used this mask and have had pretty good results during cardio workouts:

$30 is a bit too pricey for me, especially after already investing in 4 seirus running masks

Most people not wanting to wear masks just don't give a crap. It's not due to unreasonable guidelines. In my state masks are required inside all businesses, but not required if you're outside going for a walk, in your parking lot, etc., which I consider reasonable. Some states may be more strict. Personally I think it's unnecessary to wear them outside, unless you're in a crowd, or in a line, or inside a business.

But the people we're seeing in the news throwing fits in stores and attacking workers are people that have no intention of wearing masks regardless of what their state's policy is. They just don't care.

We've hit record temperatures this summer. I can totally understand not wanting to wear a mask outside just standing in your parking lot stretching your legs or taking out the trash, or walking down the street. People aren't getting sick from somebody passing by you on the street. People are getting it from prolonged contact in close proximity, crowds, closed-in environments with poor air circulation, etc.

I feel that's a step too far. I think we already have enough problems with police overreach. Giving them another reason to stop and harass people on the street is not okay. They will just abuse it.

I don't know what the answer is then, I do know the proposed $100 mask fine is not enough. I'm also 99% positive that particular fine has been given out less than a handful of times since March.

Most states are very reasonable. In fact all of them (AFAIK) except New Mexico, which requires masks on all the time outdoors except while eating or swimming. Even if you're all by yourself or well distanced from others.

I read an article in the WSJ that indoor gatherings in many places now are like the Roaring 20's, when people would gather in basements with password access through speakeasy doors to drink the illegal booze. The urge for young people to gather and socialize is just too strong and frankly there's nothing more than can be done about it other than having raids like they did back then, which were mostly ineffective and just encouraged them more. That's obviously not going to happen.

Here in lovely Marin County, the Central Marin police has the bright idea of having sting operations in downtown areas of the county, to warn/fine people for not wearing masks outside, where it's mostly affluent with few cases. Not surprisingly, they will be ignoring the Canal Area, where 90% of the cases have been occurring and is almost all Latino. And we have lots of self-righteous tattle-talers here who seem ignorant of the 6' rule outside. Due to them calling in all the time, the police will be looking for a problem which largely doesn't exist.

Where I am masks are compulsory in public places.
The times I’ve been out, I don’t see anyone not wearing one.
They we t phase 3 here while I was away and cases spiked, so they’ve battened down the hatches, so to speak.

I don’t know if I find it ironic or pathetic that someone from California is arguing against wearing masks.
That’s the mentality that has you all in the dire situation that you’re in.
