I was called in saying he was very sick and was taken to a room where a social worker was to see me. I thought it was over. But a nurse came in with her and that was a good sign, and they said he was very sick. I couldn't see him because they were waiting for the results of the covid test, which they said would have the results in a about a half an hour.

His test was negative, and as he was very sick in the ER still, I was allowed to see him. Fortunately after a blood transfusion he was doing much better. My wife wanted to see him too but she got there just as he was being transferred to ICU and no visitors are allowed there. After begging and crying to see her son, they let her see him through a window outside.

The next day he was moved to a regular room and a couple of days later was discharged. Very fortunate to have him with us still, they said he would have died within an hour, but no one knew he was so sick (not even him). He's even back to work (although reduced hours for now).

But yeah I agree hospitals going a little overboard with the no visitation rules when a patient is really sick. They should allow at least one family member to visit, even if it's only twice a day for 10 minutes at a time. And if a member wants to stay longer, they could be tested first.
That's a terrifying situation to be in. Thankfully he made it through. I can't imagine what it would be like to be in a hospital fearing for your life and not being allowed to see loved ones, or knowing a loved one is in the hospital in that condition and not being allowed in. I can't imagine anything worse than dying alone. They really need to rethink things a bit. My girlfriend's dad was brought in months ago thinking he had a heart attack. He didn't, it was just a panic attack they said, but nobody knew that until they did tests. And meanwhile, even his wife wasn't allowed into the hospital.

I don't know anything about vaccines, but how do they determine long term effects?

Like if one year from now, everyone who had the vaccine starts going deaf because of it?

Given the time needed for vaccinating (with the real deal or the placebo) at least 30,000 participants (including the booster dose given 1-2 weeks later) and waiting sufficient time to determine efficacy and safety, this Oct. 22 meeting should be interesting to watch - https://www.fda.gov/advisory-committ...t%20COVID%2D19.

Most people likely won't get a coronavirus vaccine until the middle of 2021

Heartbreaking story. This is where I draw the line. When somebody is admitted to a hospital in critical condition like this, at least one family member should be allowed in to stay with them. This is absolutely ridiculous. Is there no common sense being used during these times?

To a certain degree you give a group the vaccine and see if they are deaf a year later. It’s part of why vaccines normally take so long to be approved.

Crap, Illinois is blowing up. 5,594 cases today. Hopefully it's just an accumulation of cases that weren't recorded earlier.

I'm fairly certain I've never had it, I've never had a sense of taste or smell, so I've been told.

I wish it were that simple. The issue is it does affect everyone equally. The dumb person can catch it survive with little effect and pass it along to a genius that will die from it.

Case in point, a wedding held in Maine where they disobeyed the indoor limit, and had 65 people attend. Now nearly 150 people are infected, and 3 people that didn't even attend the wedding have died..Those 3 people, and the others that got it 2nd hand weren't stupid, or got the virus through any fault of their own..

Probably nothing, possibly something.

It all depends if it is about
a) wasting time
b) not being the Guinea pig
b) checking alternatives
c) implementing things.

Here the gouvernment decided to pretend business as normal.

For class teachers will move room instead of students, and masks are not mandatory.

Outside of classes teachers will need to wear masks as well as students in grade 5 and above.

that does not need any prep time and delaying schools opening won't change anything.

But in South Korea

schools had to build cubicles around each desk, so that would take time to implement.

If we had to do the same I could understand schools asking for a delay

In Ontario schools will have to offer on-line for parents that don't want in-school learning for their kids
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toron...home-1.5675026

setting something like that up for schools can take a bit of time. So there too I can understand a delay.
....

Its easy to name stuff you do miss but upon reflection their should be some stuff you noticed you don't miss.
There are stuff I don't miss but there is also an other side to it.

I hated prepping lunch so it was always lunch out. I don't miss spending that cash every day but I do miss the variety.

I don't miss the commute to work and the prep (ironing, shaving...)but I do miss being less available and seeing others

you need to add a hook on your door and hang your mask there.

Just for fun I looked up airline ticket prices and my jaw dropped to the floor when I saw how cheaply I could travel to the Caribbean round-trip if I wanted to (I don't). For $106 USD, I can hop on a plane and head South to the islands and back! I actually briefly considered taking a week off at the end of the month and head down there but I think they need some kind of proof that I've taken a COVID-19 test and tested negative before they let me out of the airport. I guess I could take a test, or rather, I should, but I'm not going to. Airlines really are desperate for business.

If that number is accurate, that's an insanely low hemoglobin. I also wonder the cause. Anemia? Any recent injury, loss of blood?

First you need to understand what a vaccine is.

It is a very mild relative of the disease that will create an immune response that will also be applicable to the original disease. and so your body will be better prepared to fight the original disease.

The first vaccine was for smallpox and it was a shot of cowpox. (cow in Latine is vacca and is where the term vaccine comes from)

and so if the vaccine makes your body inhospitable for the original disease (e.g. small pox) it will also be inhospitable to the original disease (i.e. cowpox) and you would have killed it very fast (i.e. let's say up to a week)

so it can't be affecting your body directly in the distant future.

That being said let's look at somthing like Covid-19

It causes heart damage

https://www.scientificamerican.com/a...-any-symptoms/

now if someone is sitting on their couch watching TV it might not be obvious their heart can only reach 95% with that 5% lost because part of their heart was damaged by Covid-19 (simple example not sure if the % makes any sense at all) but let's say a year later (or some other date in the distant future) that person tries to push their heart to 98% when it can only reach 95% then there is a problem and a heart attack happens.

so even though a disease is defeated a long time ago there can still be indirect long term effects that only become obvious with time.

That can in theory also be true with what is in the vaccine.

That being said test subjects are monitored very closely for what effects it is having on the body immediately even if they are not obviously apparent immediately (like the guy sitting on the couch watching TV) soo it is a lot less likely then the original disease.
