It turns out the package from Japan I was expecting tomorrow, arrived a day early. I washed my hands after throwing out the mailer, just to be safe. Still, a package from Japan should safe, right? It’s just Italy and China I have to worry about?

Mail isn't an issue. It can't survive on those surfaces.

It's all over the world now but I wouldn't think you'd need to worry about the virus living on packages coming from overseas.

If you want to take sterilization precautions with packages leave the box in the sun for like 30 mins to 2 hours to use up to kill covid then leave it sealed for 3 to 4 days to kill any covid that could be on the surface in the inside. You can probably take days it’s sealed in he mail as part of the 3 or 4 days as long as your sure it stayed sealed.

3 hours in air and up to 3 days on plastics and some metals. It also lives a couple of hours on cardboard so if the delivery guys sick that’s also a risk.

Why you should stop wearing your rings and watches (wedding bands included) during the coronavirus outbreak

Quote:
Wearing rings and watches could make it difficult to thoroughly wash your hands and remove germs during the coronavirus outbreak.

If you don't want to temporarily stop wearing them, take off your rings and wash them with warm water and soap every time you wash your hands.

A 2018 study from researchers at Georgia State University found that when healthcare providers wore rings to their jobs, the area where the rings sat on their skin provided "a protected area in which bacteria can flourish," the researchers wrote. They also found that people who didn't wear rings and washed their hands were able to kill more bacteria than those who wore rings.

Up to 24 hours on cardboard apparently. Keep in mind, these are laboratory tests, and the duration would probably be shorter in a real world setting.

The good thing is very few things survive the sun so just leaving packages in the sun should sanatize the outside

Yep. I kind of wish there was some kind of UV light device, like the size of a microwave or something that you could put things in to sort of zap them, and clean them. That probably exists actually, but it wouldn't be cheap.

I can’t not wear my Apple Watch, it tells me when I’ve been sitting too long and need to stand up. That tiny bit of exercise daily is keeping me alive. (I should probably exercise more...)

"Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Tuesday that millionaires would not be getting the checks. A Democratic proposal from Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) would give at least $1,000 to everyone making less than $65,000. They point out about 75 percent of Americans would qualify.

A Democratic plan from Senators Michael F. Bennet of Colorado, Cory Booker of New Jersey and Sherrod Brown of Ohio, would go even further. It provides $2,000 for every American adult and child plus another $1,500 check in the summer and $1,000 check in the fall, if the public health emergency continues. The highest income earners would not get checks under the Democratic plan."

Leave the package in the bathtub for 24 hours.
Don't forget to empty the bathtub first.

I've seen retro game/computer enthusiasts create DIY boxes with UV lamps, they put things in water to retrobright the yellowed plastic. They're not super expensive.
