What are you expecting though? An amazing technical paper or insight with every post? The ins and outs of HDR have been done to death in this thread (with the coals being raked over again in the "HDR is crayons" thread in the 4K software forum) so I'm not surprised there's been a bit more divergence lately. You could always go back and read it from the start ![]() |

This thread has always been a bit of a catch-all for anything remotely HDR related and it regularly veers far away from the topic at hand. Reminds me of when footy-related matters were discussed and other members started squealing about how it was all such a heinous transgression. I have the same reaction now as I did then: get a grip and don't be so bloody precious.
The world of HDR is what it is, we've had a good couple of years to get to grapple with it so now it's more about incremental changes and improvements rather than raging torrents of fact-filled discourse. If you wanna start talking about HDR then please come up with a topic to get the ball rolling. |

Now if you want to see some major rubbish, I do recall a thread about HDR being compared to a childs writing implement. For the love of god, please go and report that and leave this thread be ![]() |

![]() ![]() And with regards to purely 100% on topic, if some are unappreciative of how we've been on the cutting edge of HDR from the get-go as compared to how no other AV forums alerted folks to this - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ar#post9754213 prior to that date (and hobbyists being clueless as to its eventual significance at the time) and the fact that we (I) continue to do so with issues such as ICtCp – https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post15572870 , well then, that’s just a plain sad state of affairs for those seeking to learn something new as compared to what self-serving studio people feed AV journalists. |

![]() https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...y#post15134290 Hell, there’s more ‘on topic’ cutting edge material just in the hyperlinks of that ^ post to keep serious folks interested in, than in 30 pages of some of these on topic ‘debates’ we see too often. |

Believe it or not, going off topic is actually beneficial for the health, longevity and vibrancy of a thread. Now let's all do a shot of tequila and relax. Let the agave work its magic. And if we do enough agave the whole world will be in HDR.

Far be it from me to rock the boat too much. I won’t do any further reporting in this thread if this is indeed the way it’s been surviving/thriving after all this time.
That’s not to say I don’t disagree with how the thread carries on, but, whatever. As someone who never really frequented this thread before since my tv didn’t have great HDR capabilities (even if the tone mapping was great), when I came in recently, the first thing I saw was literally several posts in a row by the same person, and none of it had anything to do with HDR. I see the argument that going off topic is beneficial for the survival of a thread, but that’s totally not true, at least from my experience. It’s actually a great way to dissuade newcomers from entering the conversation with their own thoughts and opinions. And that much was proven when I was basically met with the ‘you don’t like it, you don’t have to be here’ mentality. This is a thread, not an exclusionary club. So no, I don’t think off-topic conversation allows threads to actually thrive. It only allows people who already have been posting in said thread to continue doing so because they’ve grown accustomed to it. So there’s a trade-off there… while the thread lives on through off-topic conversation, growth is stunted. I mean, the basic code of internet forums is stay on topic, and if something is off topic, find a thread where it WILL be on point. “But then this thread would die” doesn’t really hold a lot of water, at least in my opinion. Think of it this way: Geoff also suggested that if I wanted to find relevant stuff regarding this HDR conversation, I could go back to the beginning of the thread and read from there. But again, having wandered into this thread and seeing nothing but off-topic spam, what incentive do I have to do that? All a newcomer like me is going to think is, “Oh, great, this is the kind of crap I have to wade through in order to find relevant info? No thanks.” Just another reason why I believe off-topic discourse is more of a detriment than anything. I’ve spent years moderating and administrating at other super busy forums and I’ve seen the same mentality applied to threads in those places. It’s just the slowest form of death for a thread, not a revitalization. But alas, these are my opinions and mine alone, clearly. No hard feelings… as I said, don’t really want to upset the balance of things. I’ll keep my mouth shut as far as this thread is concerned from now on. If any of you are ever in upstate New York, hit me up and I’ll buy you a beer to make amends. |

![]() You've gotta bear in mind that this really is how this thread rolls, bruce may have started it but Penton is very much the keeper of the flame (it's Club Penton mk. 2 in all but name) and most people are grateful enough for all the technological insights that they take the various trips off the reservation in their stride. For newcomers it will undoubtedly be confusing but, again I ask, what it is you're actually after with HDR specifically that would lead you to look in this thread in the first place? "HDR Discussion" is kind of a wide-ranging title, even if it was all entirely on-topic there would be plenty of different discussions regarding what HDR is and what HDR does which, as I said, is currently being debated in the crayons thread anyway. |
