They could have done anything but they wouldn't have, can't see it happening ever in the MCU. Civil War is the closest we got and even then that ended with a CG heavy fight sequence.

He saw the dailies, he could have course-corrected the setting with writing. The CG (at the end) is seriously distracting, even the most ardent Black Panther fan has to admit that.

Do you think Ryan Coogler had final say on it? I really don't. Loads of Marvel movies have dodgy CG work, not just BP.

True. But he is the director you'd think he'd have the final say.

Rewriting the entire finale at the 11th hour to avoid CG would've maybe solved that problem, but could've caused others story/character-wise. Just hope the same issue doesn't crop up in the sequel.

Or Coogler was told the CGI would be done in time, and whatever underpaid company they sent it to did whatever they could and didn’t finish by the time the hard release date came around.

Yeah the fact that quality of the CG is what people keep harping on with this movie speaks volumes. Everything else about it is very, very good.

Spot on. I don't think anyone MEANT for the CG to look so poor at the end, it's not a deliberate choice or anything and it kinda puzzles me that people would think that. The problem is always one of TIME. Yes, these things are made with insanely high budgets but CG shots have to go through so many hoops (often from many different vendors) it's incredible that anything ever gets done (see here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...6&postcount=83 ) and the window of time needed to produce 2000, 2500, 3000 shots is shrinking ever tighter.

This pretty good article https://www.engadget.com/2018/02/24/...3F2urkPxbCBzbh highlights these kinds of issues and says that an unnamed recent big-budget film went out to theaters with like a hundred shots that weren't even finished! This is also why 4K VFX so isn't a thing for these kinds of movies, it's not the tech that's the issue.

I always try to count how many different CGI houses were used on Disney/Marvel movies but I lose track.

I know with Marvel movies it’s out of their hands, but I wish more directors would try and get 1 house to do everything and let them have the time to make them look good!

I really like that James Cameron commits to one CGI house, and Matt Reeves with the Planet of Apes movies

The problem is Marvel usually releases more than 1 movie a year and those movies are sometimes only a few months apart. Black Panther came out in Feb and Infinity War (in Europe) came out at the end of April.

Well let's not ignore the elephant in the room as it relates to criticism of the film.

This is definitely a departure of the norm, and a damn fine experience in comparison to others which happen to be so cookie cutter so to speak.

No way.

I've heard of so many noted directors walking away from projects because they ended up stripped of their control.

It's an assembly line over there at Disney, and then you factor in the formula for the MCU it's not wonder people end up walking away.

As said, when you're taking two or three years to make a movie then you've got far more luxury in how the CG turns out, as opposed to banging them out two or three times a year. Not that the amount of money being spent is really changing from show to show, and some damned good VFX houses have worked on the Marvel movies too, it's having the time to do it and these movies are being churned out like so much sausage.

[edit]

BTW I love a nice sausage so I'm not knocking the movies in that respect, I'm just sayin' that they're part of a massive production line and so quality in some areas will inevitably falter. And sometimes the poor CG comes as a RESULT of last minute changes, e.g. we were supposed to see Banner as Smart Hulk during the Wakanda battle in Infinity War but they felt like that reveal wasn't working over the course of that film so they junked it and went with Ruffalo in the Hulkbuster - which ended up looking like crap in the final film as they had to race to finish it.

You've given me another reason to dread 2021, which'll bring us four MCU movies (one of which I don't plan to watch at all, but it still sounds overwhelming).

This is probably the most over hyped movie in the last 20 years.
It was entertaining in some parts but also extremely generic with the story and action. Some scenes the CGI was appalling.
People were calling it a game changer and to me it brings nothing new to cinema or superhero movies.

I agree, about 2 per year is perfect for me. I love the MCU movies but only in small doses. Been feeling like I've been drowning in CBM's for awhile now.
