Didn't knew he was sick. Horrible news.

Aside from his movies I remember his public presence at the All Star Weekend two years ago.

I revisited Black Panther, seeing it this time by way of the 4K UHD Blu-ray.

Even if you take away the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe angle, this is still a great science fiction movie in its own right.

I think that the 4K UHD disc looks fantastic, and that everything jumps out of the screen. The audio presentation is somewhat muted, as per many of the Disney Marvel releases, but it gets the job done.

Here's my old review...

After the death of T'Chaka, the king of the fictional African country of Wakanda, his son, T'Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman, prepares to assume his place at the throne and his role as Black Panther in order to protect his nation's most valuable resource, vibranium, an alien meteorite metal that has allowed his society to build a vast city of highly advanced technologies while simultaneously existing under the radar as a third world country. When a concealed sample of the metal is stolen by a nefarious arms dealer, the efforts of our protagonist to bring the criminal to justice thrust him into the middle of an elaborate conspiracy to exploit the precious resource for the purpose of an uprising of African descendants around the world. When the belligerent Erik Killmonger, played by Michael B. Jordan, enters the scene to avenge a family death, T'Challa, with the help of his technologically-gifted sister, played by Letitia Wright, and a love interest confidant played by Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave), is called upon to put his Black Panther superhero abilities to the ultimate test.

The overt theme of all of the films in the Marvel Comics universe mirrors an iconic Spider-Man story quote, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Black Panther, a 2018 entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, provides a multilayered and insightful encapsulation of this theme by way of a fast-paced, action-packed, and often comedic thrill ride where all of the players elicit empathy and where even the more villainous figures have understandable and universally relatable reasons for their actions. T'Challa commands Wakanda, a place of immense wealth, with the intent of secretly harboring its resources and brilliant technologies so that they will not fall into the wrong hands, but his non-interventionist policies risk denying help and hope to millions around the globe. The story setup, with its family conflicts and messages about maturity through challenge, recalls plot elements of the first Thor film, but utilizes those elements to greater effect.

Director Ryan Coogler, who helmed the superb Rocky Balboa storyline entry, Creed, and the critically-acclaimed Fruitvale Station, admirably succeeds here with a science fiction action tale that spares no big budget expense, yet still maintains the narrative intimacy of his earlier low-key dramatic movies. Jordan, who starred in both of Coogler's previous feature films, plays one of the most impressive antagonists of the Marvel Universe, and his interactions with Boseman's T'Challa provide food for thought with regard to the perils of anger and vengeance.

Black Panther is a visually-stunning motion picture, and it rivals Thor: Ragnarok and the two Guardians of the Galaxy films for colorful exuberance, but it also surpasses those movies in terms of avoiding sensory overload. In this day and age, most of us have grown weary of movies that overuse computer-generated effects by showcasing camera shots of vast fake digital cityscapes that are supposed to impress us. The images of Wakanda, with its cloaked buildings and high-speed train rails, by contrast, come across as genuinely tangible, as does the film's most exciting action sequence, a car chase in South Korea.

Captain America: Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War still stand tall as my two favorite Marvel films to date, but this one easily slides into third place. The music soundtrack, which was curated by Kendrick Lamar, lends a pulse-racing immediacy to a superbly-executed story. Like most Marvel origin stories, this one falls prey to the familiar climactic showdown scenario between two characters with equal superpowers, but the outcome benefits from the villain's beautifully resonant final scene.

Be on the lookout for Daniel Kaluuya, who starred in my favorite film of 2017, Get Out. Screen veterans Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, and John Kani also deliver graceful appearances.

This is so sad. And even sadder by the fact Boseman was privately going through his own battle at the time. Much respect.

I watched the South Korean nightclub/chase scene in BP. I'm not as big a fan of that movie but I love that scene. Then I watched all of Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame in tribute on Saturday.

Chadwick was waaaay too young, very sad and to think he made these Marvel films while he had cancer. That's real super-hero stuff.

So glad to get the 4K BP steelbook too when Best Buy had them on sale.

I'll just shared what I posted on another forum I enjoy visiting daily:

"Rest in peace, Mr. Boseman. Thank you for the joy you brought me over the years with your films and your acting. I cannot imagine the stamina, determination, and sheer mental will power needed to work out physically for your roles; spend all that time on set; and maintain ANY semblance of a family life WHILE at the same time battling cancer, including undergoing any treatments.

My wife (43) went through a bout of multiple cellularity Hodgkin's Lymphoma a couple of years ago. We were "fortunate" in the sense that we could survive off my income alone, with a little help from my parents, and our girls were old enough to be finished with their primary and secondary education. I don't see how anyone with young kids, needing two incomes can do it.

Godspeed, Mr. Boseman. I truly hope all is well and better on any other side that may await."

Great looking dics, really impressive but i have to side with the 3D Blu Ray over the 4K UHD. The 3D is absolutely stunning and really strong, coupled with the opened up aspect ratio for certain sequences.

I was hoping the 4K might actually make the CG look better but IMO it didn't. The 3D version helps offset the weak CG quite a bit though. It's a shame the CG overall seems so unfinished, with some really poor animation and character models.

Finally picked this movie up on 4K. Haven't seen it since theatre release.

I'm getting some really bad clipping in the black levels during the early scenes. Like the uncle scene in the apartment and the forest scene when BP goes to get his ex girlfriend. Like it's reslly bad. It's the only disc in my entire collection that does this.

I'm watching on a Phillips player and Samsung HDR10 tv.

I also agree that some of the CGI and blue screen looked really bad. The people on the cliff during his ceremonial battle looked so fake.

I haven't popped this 4K in yet but right before I got my Sony x900f75, I had a Vizio P-series 75 and on that particular scene on the 1080p BD, the blacks were smudging and smearing terribly. Also a dark scene early on in Doctor Strange. I thought my Vizio was having HDMI issues cause it also would switch inputs at it's own discretion.

No such issues on my end but the night scenes really are dark and inky. My older E6 was a little on the darker side with this one.

Good eye, the blacks have been clipped badly in the HDR grade. Not that the opening scene isn't mean to be dark, it was almost impenetrable in the cinema, but they've achieved it here by lazily clipping black which causes some near-black posterisation too.

Oh, that's another title that to my eyes looks better in Dolby Vision.

I compared the scene with T'Challa meeting his father in the "afterlife savanna" and both colors and the contrast definitely have more punch in Dolby Vision, there seems to be more depth to the image.
