The undeniable effect this will have on black youth, especially from an artistic perspective, is absolutely monumental. Not to mention the amount of black women this film put front an center. I can definitely appreciate the impact that will have. Hell, there was this middle-aged black woman going absolutely bananas during the third act when all of those women were battling Killmonger. I thought her enjoyment of that particular sequence was great.

I think my original post, was maybe just that while I admire the barriers this film broke down, I think the film itself isn't particularly revelatory, you know what I mean? I still thoroughly enjoyed it. But felt that overall, it was very much still a comic book movie. I think it will be remembered for years to come in terms of the influence and boundaries it pushed for people of color within the Hollywood film industry--but that the film itself, is still just a comic book film. Albeit, a well above-average one. And one that I immensely enjoyed overall.
Now this, i can understand and respect.

I went to see this last night. I thought it was a good film, but not amazing. It lacked pace in most of it and at times didn't seem to flow very well from scene to scene - just my initial thoughts. There were some good humour and lovely picturesque scenes and good enjoyable characters.

Not sure if I will pick it up on disc.

This is definitely a Day One purchase. I liked this movie a lot more than I expected to. One of my favorite of the Marvel universe. And the steel book art is pretty cool.

Saw this yesterday loved it. But like someone else said it did had a lot of JB 007 feel to it. And some over the top CGI
I wish the stunts were more relaxed and more realistic. Like the Lexus LS coupe shot where BP tilted the car to turn They should let the car drift around the corner instead. Smh, sometimes doing things simple makes a bigger impact.

Honestly, kudos to you for evaluating your own opinions, taking in other peoples input, and having enough humility to change your stance.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. The story/events of the film itself aren't a game changer. It's an excellent comic book film, but strictly from a story perspective it isn't going to be talked about 50 years from now the way 2001 is, for example.

Where the film is a game-changer is from a cultural standpoint. From a representation standpoint. I think this will change the industry significantly, especially seeing how this film was such a box office success as well.

Yesterday I watched this movie and got bored. Might be because of stellar reviews, my expectations were high and movie never met my expectaions at any point. I am disappointed with music, pace and CGI. Marvel brand image helped a lot I guess.

Pretty much how I felt. The pacing was really off. I usually don't focus on that part of a movie, but there was really no flow to the narrative. The first hour took forever, we barely see Killmonger, then suddenly he's in Wakanda and within 5 minutes
[Show spoiler]he ascends to the damn throne!

I'll still pick it up on UHD. And hopefully it retains the expanded ratio. I saw it in Lie-MAX and the frame was opened up quite a bit. But again like many MCU movies, it's getting way too much praise. This is a good flick, but nothing more.

If you list the Best Buy 4K UHD titles sorted on release date you will see Black Panther regular release and the steelbook release listed among the May 15 releases even if it does not say so specifically. That is a strong indication that will be the release date.

Yes, that IS the release date. May 15. We'll be seeing the press release later this month. Of course, the film will stay in theaters for a little while longer after that. You'll be able to choose between buying it or going to see it another time at the theater.

Are we sure?

They'll be ALL in on infinity war and gearing up for Solo. Even though it has legs it seems like it'll be dollar theater status by then

After thinking some more about the movie, I think the real villain in the movie is Wakanda itself.

The movie doesn't outright portray it that way, but the movie is being marketed and praised by fans for embracing African culture. A country that's undefeated by outsiders and that's what they make for themselves? It's a sclerotic backwards society whose only saving grace is that a meteor from outerspace landed in Wakanda instead of somewhere else. Kudos to the makers of the movie who could make a movie almost solely starring black actors, create a terrible country like Wakanda, and have so many fans actually like that country and not have them upset about what the filmmakers did.

It's like a fantasy Africa version of Qatar or Kuwait (or even Saudi Arabia) where the vast natural wealth allows the country to completely avoid having a modern society.

So, the true villain of Black Panther is Wakanda and the old Wakanda needs to be defeated.

Don't get me wrong; I liked the movie quite a bit. A superhero movie about politics where the country is the villain was interesting and fun.

Pretty sure by modern he means global. Or at least that's what I attribute to a modern society.

Not to de-rail this conversation, but I'm asking for a friend who never upgraded to Blu-ray. Do any of the Black Panther releases come with a dvd? Can't seem to find that answer. Any help would be great.

The home release of Black Panther has not yet been officially announced. But typically, the regular blu-ray versions come with a dvd, not the 4k versions. You can see all the Thor: Ragnarok versions here to get an idea.

The page on this website for the upcoming Blu-Ray says it comes with a DVD.
