I think people are really starting to catch on about disney’s audio mixes.
When I watched the film with a friend yesterday, one who isn’t a cinemaphile or a A/V home theater geek like me, and he remarked how he remembered how “dope” the bass was in an early part of the film (the Grace Jones lookin bodyguards strike the ground with their spears, causing the lights to go out). We saw it together back in February in a non IMAX, non Dolby theater, just a standard 2K DLP so not even fancy audio. I don’t think it’s my sound system because when I showed him Dunkirk or Blade Runner 2049 he thought the sound was amazing on my speakers, especially the bass, which he could physically feel going through him. We play videogames together and he’s brought up how great the surround and bass is in games that don’t even have lossless audio. Other superhero movies like Batman v Superman or Logan didn’t have this issue either. But Black Panther was the first time he distinctly remembered a movie sounding different in the cinema. Basically, the UHD looks better than it did in theaters, but sounds worse. I think the film is completely watchable, but even with it played 10 decibels higher than I do for most other films in my collection, it sounds more like I’m playing the sound off the TV speakers. Step it up, Disney, a romance film about a 1950s dressmaker has a more dynamic soundtrack than your billion dollar superhero epics with Kendrick Lamar songs (end credit song is way better sounding off Spotify than in the actual movie). |

Speaking about the movie, with the Black Panther possibly mia they may need to recast. They could go a different direction and cast Nathan Lane in the next one. They could call it the Pink Panther. When Wakanda beckons.

Agreed, totally. No excuse to have a crappy or "subdued" soundtrack these days. Hell, regular blu-ray lossless is pretty damned good so a UHD disc MUST push the envelope further. |

Because it's a fairly big issue to lots of us. This was high on my want list but isn't now, I'll pick up a second hand copy. Feel free to highlight other aspects, people will engage, but this is a thread about the disc release on an enthusiasts forum and endless nitpicking and going over stuff is why I come here. I don't care about endless posts about packaging and steelbooks and delivery dates but I appreciate others do so just skip by them; an option open to us all.

As far as I can tell, Disney has neutered the mix in every variation. And I think we as consumers totally have a right to call out Disney on their bs. They claim the film has Dolby Atmos, but it isn’t exactly what people expect an Atmos track to be, being designed for a limited set-up (7.1.4... I think, the menu tells you) and having a subdued dynamic range. Ten years, I had no doubt that Disney was giving us the same audio track as what we heard in theaters. Now I’m pretty sure we’re getting something designed to accommodate whoever called Disney and told them their Blue Rays DVDs were too dang loud! |

I'm glad to read I'm not the only one noticing the recent issue with Disney movies audio tracks. Their movies weren't always this way...weird and so disappointing. I actually thought I needed to get my ears checked when I threw Ragnarok in for the first time. I hope they hear the complaints, analyze and correct them.

I had to buy some speakers to get a better viewing experience and so far Disney hasn't fixed anything. |

The bottom line here is that Disney is doing something different than every other studio and it isn't to our benefit. They are going to ruin meaningful films if something doesn't change quick. |
