Sure, I didn't say that there were no improvements to the UHD in other areas. The BD runs the usual SDR playbook, with the skies looking like white expanses of nothingness while the UHD reveals de sun and whatnot. The BD is still pretty damned good though, it's not as soft as some recent Diznee BDs have been (even the Ant-Man & Wasp trailer looks amazing, very crisp).

For sure.

I definitely don't disagree with you there. I think when it comes to the Marvel/Star Wars stuff, Disney still puts out exceptional blu-rays--but alas, as you pointed out, the additions of HDR/WCG, really makes specific sequences stand out a lot more on the UHDs compared to the standard BDs.

Liked the movie second time around, not that I didn't like it before but I realised/understood certain things that passed me by, like the opening narration (I always though it was old man T'Challa talking to his son in the future, but it's the father of Killmonger talking to his boy) and the BTTF reference with the automated boots was cute. I even understood why Bucky is now out and about, they've already fixed whatever it was that Hydra put in his noggin.

The early scenes are a bit choppy editorially, I don't mean the action but the flow of the conversation from one person to another, it feels like it could've had a bit more room to breathe here and there. It gets better though. And the numerous CG backgrounds still don't quite convince but they look better in HDR for sure, as does the constant CG for the Panther(s) in his suit.

Here's from a brighter outdoor scene.

This one shows some of the blocky reds, like in The Last Jedi, though nowhere near as prevalent. Seems to be an issue with Disney.

Nice, y'all can see that rust-coloured tint to the blacks on the back of Boseman's head in the 2nd 4K cap. And check the nasty posterised crush on his head in the third cap.

Thankfully I didn't see too much of that other chroma dodginess in BP, the compression is rather good for the most part though not having film grain clearly helps the HEVC encoders, as Last Jedi was awash with the stuff. There's nothing in BP that's as gigantically red as the throne room scene either so that may be another a case of different visuals benefitting the encode, rather than the encode itself being that much more fine-tuned, yeah. (Glad I'm not the only one who sees the really blocky reds in Last Jedi.)

Not seeing what you mean on the third cap for some reason. Overall I think all the UHD caps except maybe the Shuri one look better.

Agreed, my second viewing made me like the film better and get into it more. Still a little formulaic but how can a super hero film not feel that way these days? Nicely done overall though. Glad I grabbed my 4K copy used for a good price.

There is a difference between 'dark' and 'crushed'. Just pop in the standard bluray and check out the first scene in the apts and the scene in the jungle guerrilla assault. BIG difference!

The back of his head, on the right. Crushed away to a giant dark blob on the UHD with those lovely posterised edges to boot. But it's not the "overall" that I'm pointing people towards, it's how the UHD crushes black specifically which is my main bugbear, and it really is there no matter if people can see it or not.

BTW bear in mind that even when viewing the caps the gamma of your display plays a big part in assessing black, too high a gamma will crush down the blacks regardless e.g. the gamma on my iPad is SUPER high so judging black levels on there is worse than useless.

You guys like how it looks and that's cool, I can't tell you what you like just as you can't tell me what I like, but it makes the darker scenes look so flat and ugly on my TV. The ambush scene is one thing, but even in the apartment it's like they're in the black hole of Calcutta or some shit and that scene didn't look that bad in the cinema.
Agree. Even in da hood, the inside of an apartment wouldn't look that dark. It looked like a city blackout just occurred!

I can't see much difference between uhd and std regarding blacks in these pics (I can't see more posterization either), neither the previous ones, but like you say, my shitty monitor is probably crushing blacks in both.

However, it's very interesting that you found the XDR workaround, learning or proving yet one more thing about the display's nit capacity, the APL, the HDR and how they all interact.

Has anyone who's watching on a Dolby Vision-capable setup that's *not* an LG OLED seen the weird jumps in brightness that happen with the DV version of the film during daytime scenes? A great example of this is chapter 4. It looks astonishingly dim—the ship flying through the water; Forest Whitaker's mid-shots; most everything else—while occasional closeups of Lupita Nyongo look exactly the way they should.

For that matter, has anyone using an LG OLED witnessed this? I did just end up upgrading my display and have been enjoying my 65-inch B7A immensely otherwise. Night-time scenes look phenomenal in DV, and if I force the player to output HDR 10 only, all is right with the world (other than the fact that I'm not taking advantage of the DV grading, which is annoying.) None of the other DV discs I have exhibit these issues, or anything like them.

TLDR: I'm trying to figure out whether there's an issue with my display settings, my OPPO 203, or if it's really just the Dolby Vision metadata that's to blame for daytime scenes looking too dim on Black Panther.

I'm watching in Dolby Vision on a non-LG display and have not experienced this issue.

So many reasons why I am glad I can force HDR10 on all these DV titles on my LG Oled

DV has been great for Hell or High Water, It, Saving Private Ryan, The Last Jedi, and Annihilation (although that last one was via the Vudu app.) Granted, I've only had the TV for a few weeks.
