1º It is better to process 12 bits on screen 10 bits, than 10 bits on screen 10 bits

2º If you have a display of 4000 nits, you will say goodbye to the tone mapping and a good headache in UHD movies that require it

I didn't find it too dark on my JVC and shadow detail was excellent.

I found it too dark at the theater. Watching it at home is still dark, but I could actually see everything doing on.

I never noticed it being that dark in theaters. I made things out when watching it. It's not like Solo. Now, that is a movie that I noticed was dark. Still like the movie. My favorite so far this year.

I'm glad to see some of you are confirming the audio is an issue with this disc. I initially thought it was my system. Bringing up the volume a few db improves it but there is an overall imbalance with this mix. You get a sense the audio has some compression applied. Can't be certain but it's far from a reference disc.

It's supposed to be like that. This disc has been mastered in Disney Atmouse in a Disney Atmouse certified facility using Disney's very own proprietary and trademarked Atmouse mastering tools.

Saw the movie tonight, audio was mild as usual for recent Disney releases but wasn't complete trash as others made it out to be. That PQ though was amazing, fantastic quality on this disc, the use of HDR was much better here than in Thor Ragnarok. However that could just be to director's intent. Quality was so clean and colors popped making the image look almost 3D and lifelike.

I find this Black Panther 4k disc unwatchable in Dolby Vision, as some daytime scenes look very washed-out indeed. I have other Dolby Vision discs for example Grease and The Last Jedi which look fine, so I don't think the problem lies with my system. If I force my player to output HDR10 then the picture with the Black Panther 4k disk is very good indeed. Could the Dolby Vision mastering of this disc be at fault?

What scenes are we referring to exactly? Timestamps please?

During the first challenge sequence certain shots are washed out (25:11, 25:15, 25:29, 25:42) but when the scene cuts back to a close up of a character the colours become bright again.

Ok, I know what you are referring to and I believe there were others who have also pointed that out.

I noticed this as well. Very distracting. Also happened a lot in the final battle. Ironically all of the dark scenes looked beautiful (no raised black levels or letterbox bar greyness) and it was these random daylight shots that were messed up in DV. Why oh why can't we get DV that works right?!?

I read at least one person with the latest beta firmware on their Oppo 203 was able to do player-led DV processing instead of tv-led with their LG OLED B7 and said that fixed these daylight scene issues. Unfortunately, I have 2016 LG OLEDs and player-led DV does not work.

I think it may be certain models, as I have an LG television and I have had none of the problems mentioned in here regards to Dolby Vision.

HDR10 has been a lifesaver indeed

I've watched the first 30-odd minutes of this in DV (player-led, OPPO into Sony TV) and didn't notice any inconsistent brightness in the challenge scene at all.

I’ve had the same problems with the DV on Black Panther as well, with an LG 65E6 and Oppo 203. After the first home viewing upon release, I was hesitant to watch it again, but I gave it another chance a few days ago, I didn’t know about forcing the HDR10 then, so I tried the Dolby Vision Vivid mode for the first time and it made it decent, closest I remember it looking in an actual Dolby Cinema. But how do you force HDR10? I’ve never tried that before, I’d like to try this movie that way next time.

Also, this is the first problem I’ve had with DV. Justice League, Spider-Man Homecoming, Star Wars TLJ, Transformers 1 and 2 were all great in DV.

It plays in DV without issue for me. I wonder if there’s an error batch.

Hmmm I have the 2016 LG OLED and I didn't get a problem with any of those scenes. Could it be a faulty disc at this point, or perhaps needing a factory reset on the oppo with the latest beta?
