BDA version is final and approved. It was released on 12/29 as version 3.2 (http://www.blu-raydisc.info/).

Explaining its move to bring Dolby Vision 4K UHD Blu-ray authoring to London, Holger Hendel, SVP and managing director of EMEA for Pixelogic said: “Since the launch of our Dolby Vision capabilities last year, we have received increasing interest from our European customers to produce Dolby Vision products.”

“We have met that demand by adding those capabilities to our London facility so that we can provide the appropriate level of service and attention they require and deserve.”

Plenty of folks ventured in to see what it was all about (including me , for that matter, though I was never motivated to visit the AVN Expo back in the day).

Any guesses as to what they were promoting inside?
I wanted to take a swing at this one and guess: Prototypes for Spielberg's followup called A.I. 2.0 ???

(although I've seen the real answer now, and don't know anything about this new series.)

Default Dolby Vision or HDR10+? Dolby wants you to have both

"In an interview with TechRadar, Dolby Laboratories’ Senior Vice President of Consumer Entertainment Giles Baker, mused about a future in which both systems coexist.
Granted, he believes Dolby provides a better end-to-end solution for HDR mastering and delivery, but that doesn’t mean he thinks HDR10+ doesn’t have its merits. It’s just … different.

The difference between them, and the point Baker wants to make abundantly clear, is that, for Dolby Vision, all of that metadata is created by hand by colorists and editors at the movie studio.
HDR10+’s metadata, meanwhile, is produced by an upscaling algorithm. This algorithm-based mode for content generation takes a lot of work off the editors and reduces time in development, which, Baker admitted, he could understand that being seen as a positive trait.

“But HDR10+ and Dolby Vision can coexist,” Baker says, pointing to Panasonic’s recent announcement of the first HDR10+ Blu-ray player to simultaneously support Dolby Vision, the Panasonic UB820. “We don’t see any reason that discs [and players] can’t have both.”

The sentiment is a nice one: There doesn’t need to be a winner and a loser here - we should all just enjoy better-looking content in whichever format directors and creators choose to use.

Is it possible that five years from now we’ll all own discs with both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ and players and TVs capable of displaying both formats? It’s certainly possible."

Do we really need blinding lightness on the TV? I’m all for HDR but surely a sensible limit should come in for peak brightness? You could get flashing lights going from black levels to 10000nits and that concerns me regarding eye damage and epilepsy etc. Hopefully content masterers will use it sensibly!

TheSweetieMan posted a BDA press release, and something caught my eye:

Quote:
With the expansion of HDR technologies, the BDA’s new spec (V3.2) accommodates Dolby Vision, HDR10+ (which garnered support from Fox and Warner at the show and it backed by Samsung) and Philips/Technicolor’s SL-HDR2. Supporting any of these HDR technologies is optional for both player and content.
What exactly is SL-HDR2? I noticed it was published today: https://portal.etsi.org/webapp/WorkP...p?WKI_ID=50992

From my cursory reading, it looks like a standardized downconversion to SDR, and/or HDR tone mapping to any display that has a luminance less than what the title was mastered at. Am I close?

If so, I have a few questions. Is it just something built into the UHD BD player? Or does it need to be encoded on the disc somehow? And is it compatible with all displays? Or does a display have to be able to decode SL-HDR1? Meaning only LG displays right now?

The Philips HDR version has been in the spec from the start, it can be deployed as HDR with SDR downconversion metadata. They've taken the chance to update it to the latest iteration by the looks of it.

If you don't get eye damage from day to day life where brightness can far exceed 10000 nits in specular emissions then you won't get eye damage watching such content on a TV, nor will it affect epileptics any more than typical content, it's repeated flashing images etc that those folks need to be aware of regardless of how bright they are. People have got to understand that this sort of brightness isn't for constant full-field image intensity that will roast their eyeballs, it's reserved for the absolute brightest speculars and whatnot.

With known producers of bright illumination you just know it’s better to not look at directly, such flashbulb, LED flashlights, but if your eyes are looking at a display, how are you going to avoid getting spots in your eyes from very bright illumination if it’s done as a film effect?
