I agree, the colors are a bit better in spots than the MGM version but the Studio Canal transfer looks like it was sourced directly from the HD-DVD where the MGM version looks like a direct to Blu-ray transfer and not sourced from another format and is sharper.

Exactly. Additionally, during a lot of the darker scenes - for instance, when Elisabeth Shue sees Nick Cage drinking his martini on the bench and approaches him - on the SC transfer there is some pretty obvious aliasing. It was one of their early BD releases.

There's also a huge difference in framing and aspect ratio (MGM : 1.85:1 - Studio Canal : 1.66:1).

Noticed this is the unrated edition. What are the differences between this and the rated r -version?

This is one of my favorite films and have owned it for years on DVD. I bought the blu-ray the other day after reading the reviews on this site anyway. I understand Figgis and the 16mm thing, but I feel the 3.5 rating is too high. I was very disappointed and feel like it should be in the 2.5 area. Too me, the blu-ray is absolutely not worth the upgrade from DVD.

A Criterion release of this fantastic film would make my day!

Wow. A Criterion. Cool. I honestly didn't expect it for this film but that's great. Good thing I caught it on Encore and didn't buy the current bd.

I have been wanting to upgrade from DVD but, the LLV blu ray sounds like it wasn't worth the money. A Criterion release or even just a 20th Anniversary remastered edition would be great news!

From IMDb:

LaserDisc version is unrated and contains more sexually explicit footage. First pressings of the VHS versions also contained this footage but later pressings did not. The Unrated Edition has also been released on DVD and runs 112 min.
