![]() I really think that they would have more fun pointing out (with mag views) an example of why some HD editors should work with the largest display possible when cutting……. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=65198 as they all seem preoccupied with the little things in life. The only person with enough *pull* to make it work in Hollywood (for a feature film) is probably Steven S. and he’s pretty much lost interest ever since Empire of the Sun. If you’re truly interested regarding a possible long-term film capture/presentation trend that has a chance of succeeding over time…….. that would be shooting Super35 as a source format and then proceeding through a 4K DI process. Directors with enough *juice* can make that happen now as bids from post houses are slowly coming in lower and lower as more people institute and refine their 4K pipelines. |

Primarily due to the presentation aspect, i.e. Because some studios have already heavily invested in digital cinema, for example………. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/...27e3b4232d49b5 and, to a lesser extent, IMAX presentations. So, there is very little interest in outfitting theaters with 70mm projectors to reap any possible perceived value of 70mm presentations in terms of box office receipts among theater goers. Factors of lesser importance include the production costs, starting with the fact that 65mm stock is a special order from Kodak and thusly more expensive than 35mm., plus the 70mm. cams are getting long in the tooth……………….. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=5445 Etc. |

![]() Really, what is the point of the theater if it isn't even going to try to beat the presentation offered by home theater? Maybe your 2K theaters are wonderful, but ones here are major disappointment, for me. Quote:
How long will it be before the HD cameras commonly used will be able to capture the grandure equivalent of 65mm? Gary |

Fact is, due to the nature of the different businesses, in most peoples’ eyes, home theater displays and media have probably evolved faster than theatrical exhibition, closing what once was a horrendously wide gap in terms of picture and audio quality……..which is certainly good for people like us. ![]() And I agree that for home theater enthusiasts with nice immersive set-ups, the visual distinction between commercial 2K (2048x1080) digital theatrical exhibition with a JPEG2000 source on single Firewire or USB2 drives --> digital cinema server vs. full HD (1920x1080) home theater displays presenting a movie encoded on a Blu-ray disc, aint much of an incentive to get most people off of their couches and driving to their local theater, esp. when you factor in things like cell phones going off, people talking, feet stuck-to-floor syndrome, human organ noises, etc. I believe that 4K presentation utilizing 4K DCP’s as a source, has a much greater chance of enticing cinephiles back into the commercial theaters. However, the reality is that due to the competitive nature of the business, 2K exhibition is decreasing in price, faster. So, until the 4K workflow gets quicker and cheaper, 4K capable theaters will remain a comparably boutique business for the time being. Meanwhile, the pundits see 3D getting the masses back into their local Cineplex now, and to present 3D, you need digital projection………and it doesn’t have to be a Sony 4K projector, necessarily…………………unfortunately. Keep in mind though, that industry eyes who have viewed previous demos, have concluded that even commercial 2K digital is sharper than fresh 35mm. Answer prints shown via a film projector. |

Probably one his greatest contributions to the cinematic society is that he taught students at USC film school (of which he is an alumnus) for over 15 years holding the rank of full professor at the time. When I get the chance, I’ll try to find a webpage listing some notable lenser USC alumni to help folks focus their thinking. Last edited by Penton-Man; 10-13-2008 at 04:20 PM. |
