closed down by about 2015-ish as a part of the cost-cutting company restructuring. more disappointing to those qualifying clients was that the premium support program, description first paragraph -> https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamespfurst has also fizzled. the cierge people hosted some fabulous Holiday events geared toward shopping for TVs and such.

So far so good. But oled owners on avs are very defensive about the new kid on the block.

I'd say that HDR10 is perfect for high-end HDR TV if the HDR TV color volume matches or exceeds the color volume of the HDR10 mastered content: there is NO OP / no color volume transform at the TV playback.

http://www.dvinfo.net/article/show_r...014-day-5.html

Current HDR10-mastered Life of Pi static metadata: P3 gamut, 1200 nits
MasteringDisplay_ColorPrimaries : R: x=0.680000 y=0.320000, G: x=0.265000 y=0.690000, B: x=0.150000 y=0.060000, White point: x=0.312700 y=0.329000
MasteringDisplay_Luminance : min: 0.02 cd/m2, max: 1200 cd/m2

If the HDR10 TV has a P3 gamut and is capable of 1200 nits, there is no color volume mapping when displaying the current Life of Pi;

otherwise

a standardized (i.e. known / validated by content mastering artists) color volume mapping / compression is required at the TV playback.

Dolby Vision has all the fundamental HDR building blocks.
The fundamental building block Color Volume Transform is missing in HDR10: there is no standardized color volume transform specification, all the HDR10 TV manufacturers are doing their own mapping (i.e. "dumb transform", or more and less "smart transform" not known / not validated by content mastering artists).

"To qualify my comment about the gamut being compressed. In HDR, most displays correctly remap the gamut outside of their capability into their capability with a roll-off / remap. (No standard for this, which is a different issue that only Dolby has solved.) The Samsung is NOT doing that. Instead, it is compressing the entire gamut, which means colors inside of its capability are also wrong. The end result is that the Samsung looks de-saturated compared to everyone else. It is the only HDR display that we have tested that does this. LG, Sony, VIZIO and Panasonic are doing it correctly by only rolling off what is outside, not what is inside. We only tested the JS9500, have not tested the 2016 equivalent model yet. They certainly have the engineering prowess to do it correctly."

Leading CE industry trade publication, Twice Magazine, quotes Joe Kane and creative technical partner Florian Freidrich hope to use the Z9D as the master “consumer monitor” to verify the quality of their forth coming “DVE UHD Test and Demo” disc.

Not to single out OLED *fans*, but I find video nerd zealot types carrying ideologies on their sleeves to be in a different league…. crazier than religious fanatics. An easy cure would be for them all to get real jobs (i.e. so busy at the job you actually have to bring work home some of the time), or if retired, do community service or spend quality time with their families) and stop torturing themselves and others on the internet all day long.

I once belonged to a TV owner’s group thread (TV costing > $10,000) and we discouraged any outsiders (non-owner’s) from participating who didn’t have a sincere, serious interest in actually becoming an owner of that particular display. That way, from the get-go, it cut off much of the horse sh*t by agenda delivering trolls having nothing better to do in their boring lives. I made some truly fine friends thru that owner’s thread which lead to breaking bread (in their homes or restaurants) with them and their wives or friends and fine conversations. We lost one owner (he was not ‘old’) due to esophageal cancer. Tends to put everything into perspective rather quickly.

Heh, why'd ya think I've not been on here all day every day for the last couple of months. Got me a job, son! Not a 'proper job' mind you, I'm destined to be a retail monkey until the end of my days

And yeah, the zealotry does get MIGHTILY annoying (especially around our Lord and saviour OLED) but it's just human nature, if you go to pretty much any forum (not just AV) you'll see the same shit repeated ad infinitum. After a few years on the internets it gets easier though, you recognise the uber zealots and know not to entertain them.

Oh and in reference to DanBa's post it's great that we're finally getting the reasons why those Samsung-mastered Fox titles are considered to be so 'off' by the cognoscenti, it's due to how the Samsung TV itself is mapping the gamut by compressing the whole thing into what the TV can do, instead of mapping what it can do and clipping/rolling off the remainder. Interesting.

Video and audio center said 12 sold in the 1st hour. This tv will be amazing even though it doesn't have the emissive advantage. I hope in the coming years sony will use this in all sizes.

Where is the review? I see the "Sony Announces Z9D FALD-LCD UHDTVs" thread, but it just seems to be people arguing with each other page after page. I found the owner's thread, but there's not much content there yet.

1 owner so far, Larry Little.

His impressions are as good as it gets he said. He just posted that after a full day, he's yet to see any bloom or light bleed.

Larry Little say:
Quote:
I know you folks want all sorts of technical details and pics, but I'm more of a "how does the picture really look" than a technical person. I'm certainly interested is some of the technical details that might affect the picture quality, even if not obvious with a regular image, but ultimately, it's the picture that counts.

The 65 Z9D picture quality is simply incredible. I spend hours watching it last night and this morning. What impressed me most was the depth and clarity of the image. The blacks were truly impressive as was the brightness of the image without any blooming or blown highlights that I could see. Colors were incredibly rich and pure looking. The animated Blu-ray movies I checked never looked better. The black levels and color fidelity of my Z9D are so beautiful, it's hard to imagine it being much better. And given what I think is superior shadow detail and motion handling of this set compared to the OLED's I've seen, I can't imagine being more satisfied with any other set.

I understand that these terms can be nebulous and very subjective. I've heard many people describe a 3D quality to an image. I've never been able to see that, until now. The picture just seems to be more "alive" and "vibrant" than any previous display I've seen. I'm wondering is this appearance is due to the greater local contrast from the master back light drive.

As good as my Sony 950B is (was), the 65Z9D is better. Earlier this year, to get HDR, I purchased the Sony 65" 930D. I knew I was trading FALD on the 950B for Sony's new Slim Backlight Drive. I had hoped it would be good enough. In the store, the 930D looked OK, but didn't cause me to swoon. Sadly, within an hour of setting it up at home, I knew I had made a mistake. The picture was good, but not nearly good enough when compared to my 950B. It lacked a vibrancy and clarity I had come to expect with my 950B. It was returned.

Enter the Z9D. In the store, even with terrible ambient lighting, I sensed a special quality to the image that really excited me. Throughout the evening of viewing many different sources, I was continually saying "wow" to myself. I know this is very subjective, and maybe I'm full of it, but this is one gorgeous display, even better than I expected. I saw absolutely no imperfections. Even if, when you folks do more sophisticated testing that I can do, you find a slight negative, I don't believe it would change my opinion of the image quality.

I'll be interested in hearing what other owners say about this display. I think it's the best set that Sony has every produced.

Ironic that ^
Given his dynamic range mindset.

By using the Z9D tv I wonder if Joe will have an epiphany with regards to a change in thinking as to the value of HDR as compared to SDR.

On the other hand, as to Florian , I recall during the Society’s 2094 webinar Florian asking ‘what are some practical examples of situations where dynamic metadata is beneficial’. He and roughly 150 other listeners were so enlightened as to specific examples.

Me too. Seems like not many prospective buyers participating …mostly overrun with fluff ….which, for an owner’s thread is quite time consuming in order to filter out the noise for the real meat of the matter, Q&A to the Z9D based on personal experience.

Congrats to Larry (and any future owners) though. I hope the thread tightens up for easier reference, or we establish one here on Blu-ray.com. Robert? Even though perhaps not a personal owner, I'd imagine over time you'd qualify as a substantial user/watcher.

2 or 3 people taking delivery this week.

One guy was expecting delivery this past Saturday, but the delivery driver got injured on a prior delivery so he got delayed a few days.

I'll bet the waiting owner went to the scene of the accident and said "I'll take it from here boys."
