There's about ten I'll definitely buy if they come out, 2001, Apocalypse Now, Alien, Thin Red Line and a few others that escape me, but I really can't see me rebuying a vast amount like I did with Bluray.

There's a bunch of films I'd love to get in 4K, but sadly that'll never happen as they were shot with the Arri Alexa and mastered in 2K.

It's very rare, even today, for features to be mastered in 4K. Man of Steel was mastered in 2K, but luckily it was shot on 35mm, so they need only create a new 4K master from the negative. The Avengers on the other hand, was shot on the Alexa and mastered at 2K. Considering that the Alexa only does 2.8K, it's impossible to get a 4K master out of it, unless they do some upscaling and add some artificial grain.

Some are available now on Sony's 4K server. I plan to check out a few when I get the media player next month. Especially interested in Lawrence of Arabia, It Happened One Night, and Bridge on the River Kwai. Gotta have a little something in native 4k to feed my new TV, just for the sake of novelty at least.

Sony finished Skyfall at 4K, despite it having been lensed on the Alexa...

Yeah, the DI was done where my friend works. I'm guessing it was upscaled. It has a rather soft look to it, but the Alexa's 2.8K image beats Red's 4K image.

I've spent some time with a Red Epic and wasn't impressed at all. You have to pretty much capture at 5K for the image to look near as good as an Alexa's. When you make a 2K master out of it, Alexa still wins because of how clean the image is captured. The Red is just noisy. I'd rather shoot with an Alex if I had the choice, but the price of the camera makes it untouchable for indie films.
