That's Tom Bombadil, a magical entity that shape-shifts from person to bear to whatever. He will appear in the second and third Hobbit movies and save the day in the Battle Of The Five Armies.

Hmm, I wonder if the extended cut will be in 3D. I certainly hope so as that's the only way I'd watch the movie.

That's right on the money for me. I was hoping for a March release instead of May. Three days after my birthday, The Hobbit will be mine!

It looks like they did quick TBA art using a sequence from the extended banner. I would think the true art will either be Bilbo alone or a group shot like those Japanese posters.

Awesome news! Can't wait to see this one again. I think this is a great release date (few days before Easter). I know my kids will want to see this on Easter night. This movie just fits well with Easter, imo.

It's crucial to establish whether the extended cut will be 3D (as a poster above me has said). I really want this day one but if there is a 3D extended cut then i will have to use all of my non-existent patience to hold out

Why isn't the extended edition not included with this release? Cash grabs like these really piss me off. Seeing how I don't have the extended editions of LOTR on BD, I'll be buying the theatrical editions of The Hobbit as they come out and then later buy the inevitable LOTR & Hobbit Extended set.

Not that I wouldn't enjoy it, but does there really need to be an extended edition, and does one actually exist? It's already taking around 7.5 hours to tell one story. I think they've probably got everything they want from the book and appendices in the movies.

EDIT - Ok. Nevermind. Just read the Collider article. I guess it does exist. At least they tell us beforehand, so we don't double dip unknowingly.

Almost 9 hour runtime for all 3 films before the extended edition, hopefully at least 10 with extended editions. With how much Peter Jackson enjoyed the 3D filmmaking process, I can almost guarantee the EE will be 3D as well.

srinivas: The extended editions of the LOTR trilogy were released 6 months after the theatrical cut. It will be the same for these. Guaranteed double dip from me!

I can see them releasing this one in March and then in the fall releasing the EE...along with the LOTR Trilogy in 3D as well. GOD THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!

As in the book, yes. I'm surprised they revealed it as the cover art already.

Agreed.

Show the main characters together. And fit Gollum in there, plus the villain orcs, wolves, etc.

An extended version? If it's mainly dialog extended scenes, I'll hold off and get this theatrical 3D version, as the best part of the extended LOTR Trilogy IMO, was the Mouth of Sauron. I thought they would have covered Frodo in Fellowship when he enters the Barrow Downs, but it never happened in the movies. That would have been cool.

If there is a 3D extended version, it'll probably be on two blu rays. In that sense, I hope the theatrical 3D blu ray is on ONE disc, to keep the experience intact without having to switch discs midway, taking the viewer out of the experience during that time.

The Collider link has a picture of the French release and lists theatrical cut split on 2 BD3D discs + 2D BD + 2D special features in a lenticular 3D SteelBook.
