Europe wants to ban 8K TVs because they consume too much power (electricity).

Good God! That's gonna piss off a lot of people who want to buy a 8K TV. especially those in the United States.

That’s not a bad thing because there are not a lot of people buying 8k TVs anyway.

Spoiler alert: video disc is waaaaaaay down on that list.

It'll remain as a niche thing for a while yet but no-one, no-one, is going to force through an 8K update for pre-recorded mass-replication Blu-ray in an environment when the market is literally shrinking day by day, year on year. Add in the rumours that Pannysonic are going to be pulling out of the disc player market next year and wow, the options for who in the BDA would even be capable of producing and releasing 8K playback hardware are growing ever more limited. Sony and LG are gonna be the last two standing, both with vested interests in 8K to be sure to drive their 8K TV sales but that's another thing: where's all the hype for 8K?

For years before the release of HD software we were still hearing about HD remasters, for years before the release of UHD software we were still hearing about 4K remasters, but where's all that guff for 8K? You won't find it because for most movies 8K is the most diminished of returns so they're not finished out to that resolution. Overscanned at point of source, certainly. Mastered as such? Not on your life, not as standard anyway as NHK are the ones who are paying to have stuff like 2001:ASO and My Fair Lady output to 8K so they can show them on Japanese 8K TV. Even then, even with those classic 65mm large format shows, there's a very real limit to what those older film stocks can resolve and I'd wager that they don't get close to any kind of objectively measured 8K resolution (just as some 35mm shows don't get anywhere near 4K).

The people who will be making contemporary 8K content that really has the 'wow' factor will be the streamers....who don't usually release much of anything on disc, for what I hope are obvious reasons. So with new 8K content behind a streaming paywall and old 8K content not up to snuff I can't see any reason whatsoever why the BDA et al would even think about producing an 8K Blu-ray format.
I totally agree with it. If we have 8K Blu-ray disc ever, it's position will be such as SACD's is. The highest level of quality for high-end users, only few releases and high prices. Mostly in Japan and South Korea. And PS6

Default Comcast To Bring Dolby Vision HDR World Cup Coverage To Subscribers

Comcast and Verizon FIOS are the two best cable companies in the United States, and some cities in the USA consumers have access to both Verizon FIOS and Comcast from the same house, condo, or apartment.

Consumers have had access to 4K programming since 2016 with the 4K Blu-ray format and Dolby Vision HDR on 4K Blu-ray since 2017. Its good to hear that Comcast in 2022 is now offering native 4K programming with Dolby Vision HDR with their 4K cable TV boxes.

“Comcast will give subscribers a personalized, interactive and bilingual viewing experience for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 via its Xfinity X1 and Xfinity Flex platforms, Xfinity Stream app and XClass TV, it said today.”

“For the first time it will enable eligible Xfinity X1 subscribers to watch the tournament in Dolby Vision high dynamic range (HDR) 4K, it said.”

I was just reading the ASC article on this. And they don't mention anything about 8k. But they do confirm that they used the Alexa Mini LF as the main camera, and regular LF and Phantom Flex 4k for slomo. So I guess the 8k samples were one off upscales, maybe a specific partnership with Samsung for demo material. I assume most of the show was mastered in 4k.

I would be shocked if the DI was at anything other than 4K, heck even 4K isn't always guaranteed these days regardless of format. Outside of a few one-offs like Girl With the Dragon Tattoo or Gone Girl, 4K is as good as it gets for final output. I don't expect to see >4K anytime soon.

I've heard of a whopping two shows so far:

Darren Aronofsky says they're scanning Pi in 8k for an upcoming IMAX release. Pi was shot on 16mm BTW.

Does the Xbox Series X support it? Kind of weird for them to single out the PS5.

Both consoles support it by design, but it is only enabled in the testing units and it isn't something being actively worked on, because there is no reason to have it enabled at this time, regardless of whether or not a user has an 8K TV. The software and media content simply isn't there and it's a design feature that would likely only be enabled in future revisions of the console design - think Xbox Whatever in 6 years from now - and later turned on in older models, if it ever becomes applicable or useful, which it may not.

I think people need to realize 8K was just too niche and unnecessary. Like SACD was to audio, 8K is to video. A flight of fancy concept pushed hard onto consumers who didn't see benefit from, hence resulting in widespread adoption. We just don't need it from typical viewing distance and powering all those pixels is wasted energy it could be put into 4K res brightness and colour volumes of P3 space.

You could argue the processing power required trickled down from the R&D and has now given 4K more development. Perhaps that's worth it for that.

Given that UHDTV is very much half-baked because of botched HDR implementation, an overall lack of content outside of Asia, and shit-kicker budget screens, one could certainly make the same argument about 4K. Had HDR been introduced and perfected with HDTV and Blu-Ray, I think a transition to 4K from 2K either wouldn't have happened at all or would have happened in the early or mid 2020's and gone a lot differently than it did in the early 2010's. We went from having great high-end and mid-range HDTVs and 3D TVs in the early 2010's, to years of mediocre budget UHDTVs and not so great HDTVs at the low-end by the middle, before getting better UHDTVs as 2020 drew nearer.
