Europe wants to ban 8K TVs because they consume too much power (electricity).

That’s not a bad thing because there are not a lot of people buying 8k TVs anyway.

Comcast and Verizon FIOS are the two best cable companies in the United States, and some cities in the USA consumers have access to both Verizon FIOS and Comcast from the same house, condo, or apartment.
Consumers have had access to 4K programming since 2016 with the 4K Blu-ray format and Dolby Vision HDR on 4K Blu-ray since 2017. Its good to hear that Comcast in 2022 is now offering native 4K programming with Dolby Vision HDR with their 4K cable TV boxes. Select Quotes “Comcast will give subscribers a personalized, interactive and bilingual viewing experience for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 via its Xfinity X1 and Xfinity Flex platforms, Xfinity Stream app and XClass TV, it said today.” “For the first time it will enable eligible Xfinity X1 subscribers to watch the tournament in Dolby Vision high dynamic range (HDR) 4K, it said.” https://www.tvtechnology.com/news/co...to-subscribers |

Darren Aronofsky says they're scanning Pi in 8k for an upcoming IMAX release. Pi was shot on 16mm BTW.

Both consoles support it by design, but it is only enabled in the testing units and it isn't something being actively worked on, because there is no reason to have it enabled at this time, regardless of whether or not a user has an 8K TV. The software and media content simply isn't there and it's a design feature that would likely only be enabled in future revisions of the console design - think Xbox Whatever in 6 years from now - and later turned on in older models, if it ever becomes applicable or useful, which it may not.

You could argue the processing power required trickled down from the R&D and has now given 4K more development. Perhaps that's worth it for that. |

Given that UHDTV is very much half-baked because of botched HDR implementation, an overall lack of content outside of Asia, and shit-kicker budget screens, one could certainly make the same argument about 4K. Had HDR been introduced and perfected with HDTV and Blu-Ray, I think a transition to 4K from 2K either wouldn't have happened at all or would have happened in the early or mid 2020's and gone a lot differently than it did in the early 2010's. We went from having great high-end and mid-range HDTVs and 3D TVs in the early 2010's, to years of mediocre budget UHDTVs and not so great HDTVs at the low-end by the middle, before getting better UHDTVs as 2020 drew nearer.
