I know they cranked it up but have they also added fake grain?

They likely sharpened it, that's why the grain is more pronounced.

I feel like the French version has a slight edge over the US due to the higher bitrates. It appears in most caps the compression is better. I believe once the FEL layer is unpacked during playback it probably has an even greater edge. It’s unfortunate the US version doesn’t have higher bitrates to match the French one, but I may have to import since I really love this movie and the new transfer. Still waiting on that 4K Kino Lorber of Brick….
