I doubt it will be a full year apart. If it is not all 3 movies, it will probably be a few months apart each.

They can't? Really?

Guess my Abyss DVD is just figment of my imagination...

Seamless branching has been part of the DVD spec from the start.

Actually, i think those were released on double-sided discs without seemless.

They did seamlessly integrate the additional content, complete with a reworked musical score for those scenes, but it was not seamless branching, and the extended editions did not have the theatrical editions included.
(Which is why I own both).
But yes, the Blu-ray (theoretically) should be able to do this.
I hope PJ also uses seamless branching, but as long as it is AT LEAST the extended edition, i will be fine with that.
It's been said on this thread time and time again: the way the EEs were produced would not enable seemless branching even on the blu-ray. Something with the rerecorded score, or something. Personally, I'd prefer without seemless branching, anyways. That, imo, would detract from the simple ecperience of ACTUALLY WATCHING A MOVIE. Seriously, the Extended are already as good as it's going to get, so no need.

The 3rd release of LOTR had both editions on one, double sided disc. Are they not considered seamless branching?

Actually, the latest 2 disc versions of the LotR films did have seamless branching for both versions, as evidenced by certain audio mistakes.

For example, the Extended Cut scene of the hobbits dancing inside the Green Dragon in FotR has the singing start on the exterior shot. The seamless branching takes the exterior shot from the theatrical version, which had no singing, and then abrubtly cuts to the singing and dancing inside the Green Dragon from the extended cut.

This is a reason that I don't want seamless branching for the Blu-rays. I don't want these mistakes present.

What is this then. Its the backcover for Fellowship extended/theatrical DVD

It clearly states both versions on the same disc. If it is not seamless branching what is it then?

Wow never realized that about the LOTR 2-disc version. I bought them specifically for the new extras and still watch my "book" editions for the films.

I believe that is the same version my brother has. It does indeed have both the extended and theatrical versions on one disc . . . one on each side of the disc.

That is incorrect. I own these discs. Each version of the film on all three discs has one half of the film on one side and the second half on the other.

It is done via seamless branching.

Perhaps there are two distinct soundtracks on the disc... one track automatically gets selected when you watch the theatrical, and the other when you watch the extended? That would allow seamless branching even though the two edits have different musical scores etc.

There is no doubt about it. Warner MUST go all out with TLOTR trilogy. It is the biggest movies of all time both critically and boxoffice. These movie are EVEN bigger then The Dark Knight. These movies are HUGE
Wouldn't you agree?

The LOTR trilogy is better than Dark Knight as a whole, but not just one of the movies. Warner will not mess it up. Just like Matrix they will make a ton of money on LOTR as well. The bad thing is you know if it was just New Line you know they would have 7.1 DTS-HD MA and top notch video.
