3. That would put the first Hobbit film at X-mas 2011 and the second at 2012. This would mean no extended editions until fall / holiday season of 2011.

As I have said before, I will be more than happy to double dip as I will more than likely get over a year of use out of the theatrical verisons before the others are available.

And quite honestly, as they released each EE, I found the added material to be less important and more time consuming, even in some cases interrupting the flow of the movie. I really enjoy the FOTR material, but after that, there are barely a few items in TTT and in ROTK I usually fast forward through some parts.
This from theonering.net posted 2 days ago:

In the last few weeks, we’ve heard from reliable sources that casting directors for “The Hobbit” have been assigned in Great Britain, but the ball is now rolling ‘for real’ in New Zealand! The site acting-auditions.org just posted an announcement that MGM Studios New Zealand casting for ‘The Hobbit” Part 1 will begin this coming Monday, December 14. Per their site:

“Casting is scheduled to begin next week, December 14, 2009, on the upcoming MGM Studios feature film “The Hobbit” Part 1. The project is now being developed as two films, and principal photography is tentatively scheduled to begin in New Zealand around May or June 2011. Please submit photos and resume by mail only. No phone calls or personal drop-offs.”

So if principal photography begins mid-2011, I don't see how the movies could be released by the end of 2011, as Wikipedia and other sources cite. As for the extra features on the EE's (and the TE's), they are an important part of the release, and offer a huge amount of insight to the movie-making process and Tolkien's world. I have seen them all at least once, and wish there were more.

The Hobbit always struck me as a 2012 movie. These projects take so long to get done, and we're already almost in 2010, and they are still a long way off from actual production.

I can not wait for this trilogy. But only for another year, it is still really, really long. And then for when the EE?
Cheers

Filming on The Hobbit Part 1 is set to start in Summer 2010 and the movie is set for release in late 2011 (most likely December). Straight from Peter Jackson himself.

The script for Part 1 is complete and the script for Part 2 is currently being worked on.

I do wonder if like how the first 3 films were all shot back to back, they will try to film the Hobbit movies back to back?

Either Jackson or Del Toro said they wanted to shoot over like 300something days

So...yes.

300 days? thats almost a full year of shooting. Even if all goes well and they start shooting next summer, most movies these days need like a year of post for editing, CGI, all that good stuff. I just dont see how this movie comes out before 2012.

Didnt they say recently that the schedule was slipping, that the release date would be delayed?

The delay was a rumor, the 300+ days isn't JUST for the first film, most of the back half of that shooting will probably be for Part 2.

Part 1 will be in the can in time.

Let's hope so! It's at the point now where it is taking as long to film and release LOTR and the Hobbit as it took for Tokien to write LOTR (12 years)!

When rumors hit the Net last week that the highly-anticipated adaptation of The Hobbit was being delayed a full year, it wasn’t good news for fans who are dying to see this film on the big-screen. However, we were right to treat it as a rumor, as soon afterward, producer Peter Jackson debunked the rumor, saying that as far as he’s concerned there’s been no delay and the film (Part 1) is still on course for a December 2011 release.

So you guys can stop worrying.

Considering LoTR is pretty much this generation's SW, I imagine they will easily crush any previous catalog title release record. Should easily go above 200,000...in one week.

So can anybody confirm if the movie will be dolbyTHD or DTS 7.1?

This movie deserves a 7.1 track.

Fixed

The Dark Knight and Transformers 2 are going down

...that's highly optimistic/slightly delusional thinking though for The Dark Knight's total.

I really hope this gets a 5 star rating across the board; picture, audio, supplements. I think it's funny how that preview doesn't say the release date. Just "look for it." People are gonna go to Best Buy tonight and ask about it.
