Please keep in mind that the reason we're getting the theatrical editions in 2010 is because of demand. Every other newbie post on this forum since it started was "when is LOTR coming to blu-ray". Peter Jackson will not be ready to drop the EEs on blu-ray until just before Hobbit. Partly, I'm sure to promote the Hobbit films, and partly because he won't have the time to personally supervise a release until then.

It is not illegitimate for a Director to want to personally supervise what may end up being the most important film (series) they ever make, particularly given how near and dear these films are to him.

If you don't want the TEs - get over it. You don't have to buy them. The original plan was no LOTR on blu-ray until 2012. If you are offended that the TEs are coming out - please pretend that the original plan is still in place - no LOTR blu-ray release on the horizon.

My most anticipated rental that is for sure. The only set I want to buy is the EEs though and will wait for a purchase when those come out.

Is it really too much to ask to have both in one package? I love the EEs, and if I had to only purchase one set, it would be the EEs, but I wouldn't mind having the TEs for when I want to watch LotR and don't have the time to invest in the EEs.

I'm going to whole heartedly agree with Elvis here!
Sadly, I have every intention of supporting the greed.

They are a business, they want to make the most money they possibly can. To fault them for that would be illogical.

Ha! That could be a while. But if someone did, they might try putting in a few scenes as originally written in the book that Jackson felt compelled to bypass. Some that I would like to see:

Fellowship of the Ring:
Frodo, Sam, and Pippin leave Hobbiton as originally written;
Their first encounter with the first Black Riders in the Green Hill country;
Farmer Maggot;
The Old Forest;
Tom Bombadil and Goldberry;
the Barrow Wright and the correct acquisition of Merry and Pippin's weapons;
meeting with Glorfindel (vice Arwen);
the battle with the wolves after being defeated by Caradhras;
Mirrormere, Nimrodel, and Cerin Amroth (with a flashback to Aragorn and Arwen's betrothal there;
the "real" scenes in Galadriel's mirror, with Sam;
the actual gifts given to the Fellowship by Galadriel;
what Frodo saw on Amon Hen;

The Two Towers;
Helms Deep without the Lothlorien elves
Faramir as depicted by Tolkien - he never would have attempted to take the ring;

Return of the King:
Journey of Frodo and Sam to Mordor as written - Sam was not "sent home" by Frodo;
Ghan-buri-Ghan;
Death of Theoden per the book; Theoden to Eomer, "Hail, King of the Mark!";
Challenge of Gandalf to the King of the Nazgul (Gandalf did not wait to die in a courtyard);
Development of romance between Faramir and Eowyn;
Scouring of the Shire and the actual death of Wormtongue and Saruman;
Sam's planting of the mallorn tree where Bilbo's party tree had been cut down;
and of course the epilogue

Just a few ideas; anyone have any others?
Maybe we could make a thread out of this?

I don't care that they are releasing them seperately and at different times, good business and I want them to stay in business. I don't understand people getting really upset over this; I don't mind waiting a bit for the eventual EE release.

Not to start an argument...

but do you think that WB will have the original color (Green,red,Blue) for the BD cases? to me that would be a great idea, and it would be continues. I heard that the BD case will have slips as well.

That would be awesome, especially if they were the same colors but a little clear rather than solid. Slipcovers would be awesome as well.

I was thinking like the Incredible Hulk case (but a little darker for the green case of course).

Many of us care. I personally have no intention of watching a neutered edition of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. If some people prefer them, then good for them. But I don't, and I will not spend money on them. I'll be patiently waiting for the extended cuts. It's the only way to watch the trilogy in my eyes.

You know, I liked how they did the 'Incredible Hulk'-BD with the green case,
much like the DVD of 'Hulk' with the darker matte-green and embossed logo inside.
Of course there was luckily also the (lenticular) slipcover to cover up the ugly promo-bars on the artwork.

But anyway, a similar thing for the "LOTR"-films would be cool.
How about this:
Have the cases in a gold-color as for the theme and the ring(s).
Then have something cardboard, like slipcovers usually, to have those book-colors on them.
Probably with text in relief and shiny gold too.

Just an idea.

I noticed the Theatrical DVDs I have, have transparent boxes.
But they do come across a little "goldish" cause of the artworks.
Which pretty much have the posters on them, so you guys know what kind of colors they have.

The plastic BD-boxes colored would be nice too, but I think it might look a bit too "happy".
As BD-boxes tend to look more "neon"-like or something,
just look at the regular blu and Incredible Hulk green ones.

Also, if anything, I'd have made the BD-boxes the same only then (semi-)transparent black.
A la 'The Matrix Experience'-case, but then with some transparency thrown in.

But that's just how I see it.

The way I think it will turn out though, is probably just some kind of box,
in the way of the 'Batman Anthology' or perhaps again 'The Ultimate Matrix Collection'.
Then plain blu-boxes inside for the discs, that's pretty much the trend anyway.
It's alright for most films, but I'd like to see a little more special and themed packaging.
The blu has got to go... at least toned down...

Unless they do something qualitatively different than the standard blu ray case or box, I think I will just toss the regular definition discs and keep the blu's in the original extended packaging and trilogy box.

Dont throw the Blu-ray box away. According to press info they are sticking a living hobbit inside the box (with hairy feet)
