How on Earth can you make these wild claims?

Watching FoTR right now and it's not that bad in my opinion you can see a few scenes that don't look that great here and there but not consistently. This is nowhere near how bad the PQ was on the first Gangs of New York and I still have that version. Not debating any sides but for ME it's enjoyable. I too want the EE's but for the time being they're not out.

Once again the STUDIO has spent more money with restorations on titles that recouped far less profit.

There's a very good chance that with the bad rap Warner has gotten over some of the digital scrubbing in these theatrical BDs that they'll right some of those wrongs next time around with the EE. If Jackson decides to do anything fancier with the EEs, it may require a new DI anyway, so that would be the ideal time for the studio to invest.

Movies with stellar transfers simply do not get these types of criticisms from major review outlets, it just doesn't happen. Are you saying their complaints are imagined? I am not saying anything they haven't already said on record.

I haven't seen them, no. I'm renting them, they just haven't arrived at my doorstep yet. Now, why don't you answer the question you quoted rather than evading it?
I'm sorry, do we live in some kind of bizarro world where criticism comes before experiencing?

In answer to your other question, which I assume was the one referring to people claiming that this couldn't be bettered, then I say this; I have not once stated that a better quality source couldn't exist. I don't understand why you're saying that I am.

Just watched bits here and there. I don't know anything about film grain or DNR and they look good enough for me on my 32 inch HDTV. 1 complain tough. I watched all of the trailers and on ROTK, after each trailer, isntead of returning to the special features page, it resumes the movie where I left the viewing.

Okay then, please answer my question crystal clear if you don't mind, if possible would you rather have FOTR to have a brand new DI? Or is the quality of the current version, the definitive version for you?

Some movies don't "deserve" such treatment because studios can't afford to do it with every single release they put out, but LotR is one of the most important releases in WB's catalog. Of course it deserves a new DI, if it doesn't then nothing does. If it gets one and ends up looking much improved I wonder what everyone saying "It looks fantastic! This can't be improved!" will say.

And it just released today, it's not like I can put jet fuel in the truck delivering the rental copy to me to get it here faster.

Like I said, movies with fantastic transfers simply do not get such poor marks from so many major review sites, just doesn't happen. It's obvious Fellowship is lackluster visually.

What? Every major review I mentioned there had seen the movie. Those critiques followed their viewings of it. With movies with fantastic transfers that simply does not happen

Everyone looked like they had a coat of wax on their faces and looked like talking barbie dolls(they were very glossy). Other than that, I don't have any glaring negatives to spew. I don't think it's quite a 4/5, but I also think 3.5/5 is a bit low. So I'll go with 3.75/5. Audio however is awesome. Easily worth the 5/5 given on this review.

Side note: for the reviewer that asked for a screenshot of the 1hour 50minute and 20sec mark, while I don't have the ability to give a worthy screenshot, I will say that they entire M.O.M sequence looks stunning, and the contrast between dark and color when Gollum is watching Frodo/Gandalf from the shadows is very very nicely represented. The color of his eyes really stood out to me against the darkness of the mines.

Tv is a 42pz80u Panny 1080 plasma from about 4 feet away, just to give an idea of how close I am.
thanks for sharing your opinion *and* for sharing your viewing environment.

Could we ask other posters sharing their opinions to do the same? It would go a long way to actually making sense of what people are seeing.

If they can re-digitize a relatively minor blockbuster like Minority Report, or some classic title a handful of people will buy, Fellowship is just a no-brainer. Hell, they could even use the new master for the rumored 3D conversion and save themselves the trouble later.

Everyone's opinion is valid, but I think the issue most are having with those who are of the mind that FotR - for whatever reason - is inferior in PQ are tossing around statements like "it clearly is...", "it obviously is...", etc. Each person has his/her own take on DNR and film grain, so there is nothing "obvious" or "clear" about the points you all are making about the issues with the PQ. Even though it is obvious or clear to you, it is still after all just an opinion - not a fact, no matter how many people agree with you. Just make your point (which a few of you have made many times over already) and keep it moving. If people choose not to agree with you then that's fine. You have used this forum as your soap box to be heard, and we hear you loud and clear. I personally have purchased thesse titles today because I am a LotR fan - plain and simple. I am a high end video/audiophile and I look forward to seeing thses in all of their intended glory....and I don't have to try to force anyone to see things my way.

This was the best line from the article here today:

perhaps more to the point, each person is looking at a *different image* because each person has a different viewing environment. Even if two people have the same 50" TV and have it calibrated identically with the same blu-ray player, if one person views their set from 5 feet away and the other person views their set from 8 feet away, their impressions of *detail related* issues like DNR will be completely different.

That's why there's really no point at all to someone just sharing their opinion about the image quality *unless* they also share their display size and viewing distance.
