To this day I never participate at AVS because of its behavior during HD rollout. It's almost unbelievable that a forum dedicated to A/V excellence could endorse the worse format and engage in a campaign to silence those who were just being honest about the advantages of blu-ray.

Originally the "sword edition" was $15 more expensive than the standard BR edition. The only difference was the inclusion of a tiny "sword" letter opener that looked like Aragorn's sword. Now, BB has raised the price of the standard edition to $10 higher than the sword edition and left the price of the sword edition alone.

If you look at the link in the post, you can see both packages.

After watching the rest of Fellowship, it's not really as bad as I originally thought. Yeah, the shire isn't great, but as the movie progresses the PQ gets better for some reason.

It's only that price on their website. They do have free shipping to any walmart. It's still $69.99 in the stores.

Ironic, don't you think? A noble man in an ignoble role played by John Noble.

What does HDDVD and LOTR Trilogy have to do with each other?
Fact: LOTR was never released on HDDVD.....

Let try not to sway to off topic with this

However, I am confused on another front here - I made sure that the optical connection was selected on my PS3 settings and that everything was switched over to bitstream, and now LotR will not play ANY sound whatsoever. I remember when I first got King Kong on blu ray the same thing happened, and I was advised to switch to PCM which solved it. But this also reduced the surround effects on some other movies like The Dark Knight - when the Joker starts shooting up Harvey Dent's protection truck in the tunnel, there's a lovely effect of the sound of bullets circling all around you, which is completely lost in PCM.

I went through the settings again, and under video settings I can switch things to bitstream, but under audio settings, it won't let me deselect PCM at all which I hadn't noticed before. How am I to solve the problem of completely missing audio, if I'm supposed to be running bitstream with optical? Yet if I set it to PCM, some surround effects and bass is lost...

Sorry for hijacking this thread for technical advice, I know it's really not the proper area for it
The reason you were losing Surround Sound effects on PCM is because when the sound is output through PCM and its lossless, you only get stereo lossless. You should still set to Bitstream, but you should deselect all the lossless codecs like DTS-HD MA.
I guess you will need to buy a new receiver. Try to sell your current one on Ebay. There are some fairly cheap receivers that can handle lossless, and you don't need to completely replace your speakers, I'm sure they're quite fine. If your PS3 is the newer slimline one, you can choose whether you want PCM or Bitstream output. Just make sure your next receiver will handle Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD-MA.

I'd rather this thread be hijacked for technical advice than have to sift through pages and pages of arguing over the PQ.

The vitriol is coming from one side. It's only reasonable for people to get defensive when you call them blind and stupid.

I know some of you guys think it's funny to change somebody's quote, but that's not cool. That is some jackass behavior, I'm not laughing. There's nothing clever about putting words in someone's mouth, it's extremely rude. Grow up.

I was referring to the books, not the movie.
He's a jerk in both, Jackson didn't "mess up" that character at all. He cut his scenes down a little bit, (many of them are in the EE), but he is portrayed just as unflatteringly in both sources. There is nothing noble about having a total breakdown and watching your people burn because you saw your own doom in the palantir. He's mean to Pippin, dismissive of Faramir, openly hostile to Gandalf (and, by proxy, Aragorn), and he's wrapped up in personal pettiness at the worst possible time. None of that is "invented" for the movie.

I was wondering why they chose him for Elrond, since you know, he's not really "the fairest of them all." Oh yeah, the whole being a good actor thing.

Default PQ&AQ on FoTR

Just received my copy of FoTR on BD today, and again find myself baffled about it's reported PQ.Sure:not reference quality, but I would give it a solid 4/5.Was pretty sharp on my TV (waaaay better than DVD).Didn't see any evidence of it being DNR to death either.Probably some, but not excessive.

Strange how we perceive quality in such differing ways.Audio was very good. Can understand why people raves about it

One question:I have a sony BDP-500 blue ray player, and uses the stereo outputs to my denon PMA 2000 for sound.Do I get HD sound,or is that solely directed through the HDMI?FoTR only has one sound-option,and it sure does sound sweet on my setup so personally would guess I'm getting the HD sound.

Yeah, I had a little chuckle myself at the idea of an elf suffering from hair-loss; but he is an excellent actor.

Finally released Down Under and I watched Fellowship last night. Reasonably happy with the PQ and I thought that the AQ was SPECTACULAR
To me worth the upgrade on AQ alone.
