Whats the quality of the PQ on the theatrical release? Ive read the reviews but i want opinions from people on here that have them. I have the extended and they look very nice IMO.

They are good, but not quite as good as the extended cuts.

Some people accuse the Extendeds as having "teal tint" and prefer the color timing of the Theatricals, but ... ymmv ...

Just Fellowship of the Ring. The other two films have not been tinkered with in terms of teal.

I was comparing to the DVDs, which they are much better than. Also, as I noted above the EEs have better PQ than the TEs.

the 3 and a half hour versions of each are fine.

those are the movies we saw and fell in love with

i have the theatrical and extended DVDs and only watched the EE once.. don't see the internet nerd fascination with them.

Just picked up the theatrical at target for $15 last week.

y'all can keep the $70 EE

Maybe both of ya should read the thread more carefully - wherein, folks have given several reasons for "owning the theatrical set" (like you just did - uh, did you notice that you were agreeing with someone who completely disagreed with what you were saying?).

Isn't that the same as this one:

... except for the cover? Cause I think I picked that one up for about $10-$12.

The other one included DVDs and digital copies. But I am more than happy with the one you linked, got that pretty cheap a while back as well..

Are the current US steels without the bonus DVD? Noticed they're on sale, and I already own the 2-disc BBY ones w/o interior art (so it really doesn't matter for me), but clicked the link to the page for them on this site, and they show as 1-disc releases (the ones on sale). Yet the "slipback" images show them as being 2-disc. Is that just an error on this site?

A little off topic, but for those that might be interested Bottleneck Gallery has a pretty neat set of prints, for all 3 films, by Matt Ferguson. I've ordered form the place before and they are fantastic. If you're interested, order quick, because their items are always super limited.

Has there been any news or hints about a remastered version of the TE cut?

I haven't bought The Lord of the Rings yet.
And i was wondering, so popular films and no 4K remastered transfers yet?

Warner hasn't been as aggressive or capable as Sony in 4k catalog releases but they aren't slouches.

We have Blade Runner, Harry Potter, and Batman.

We'll probably see a Lord of the Rings before we'll see back catalog from Disney.

Why bother with another 2K upscale and revisionist color tweaking?

No, it isn't just WB. These are very old movies, SFX-wise. The word all along has been "it will never happen" because the SFX shots, especially, simply wouldn't hold up - and we're talking almost the entire movie. Some shots would have to be completely redone. No-one could afford that or would want to do it. Everyone's older, if still alive, and have moved on. If you haven't bought the BD version yet, well, that's on you - just keep holding out for some imagined perfection. I'm sure there will eventually be a whole new movie made in, maybe, 10-20 years. But that might only be 8K, better to hold off for the 12K remaster, eh?
