Warner spent $6 million on the restorations of North By Northwest, The Magician of Oz, Gone With the Wind and Woodstock. Interesting...

I have to say I found the announcement today with the "includes previews of extended versions" pretty funny...I guess I'm not as much of a LOTR fan as some, because I wouldn't consider buying them unless they are the complete versions, and I *really* would not want to see a "preview" for the complete versions on these versions that are still going to cost probably $100.

At least they are being upfront and announcing the double-dip at the same time - heck they are even giving you a preview of the double dip! LOL

I'm still interested in the TE's, but paying for 6 DVDs is a little less enticing (especially when 3 will immediately become collectible coasters).

I'd just as soon have 3 BDs for the films, and a 4th for all those SD extras. But I suppose that would look as meager as it really is...

Sounds like those previews and all of the other special features are merely the same ones that were on the DVD releases. Apparently they are not including any new material.

Hopefully the extended editions of the movies are on one blu-ray each. There should be no reason they need to split the movies up when the have 50 GB to work with.

Question

Question:

Do the 6 extra DVDs (I guess 2 per film then) mean that those are all extras in SD?
Or would there also HD-extras on the film-discs?

The news update lists a DVD of SD extras (from the original 2-disc dvd releases) and a digital copy DVD per film.

HD extras are probably just trailers (The Lord of the Rings trilogy supertrailer, game trailers) on the movie BDs.

Look, I don't doubt it's fascinating information, but calling it "mandatory" is a stretch. It's only mandatory if you want to know every square inch of Middle Earth. It's not necessarily mandatory to enjoy the movies, as I have.

I believe the quote was "mandatory for understanding the total picture". Certainly, the stories can stand by themselves without reading the appendices.

There's also information about what happens AFTER LOTR. Aragorn's eventual death. Gimli and Legolas' continuing friendship. IIRC, they both end up sailing in to the west. And I think Sam does also, after his wife dies. He is the last of the Ringbearers.

I always thought that would have a nice way to wrap up the extended edition. If Jackson added the pre-LOTR material in the Fellowship prologue, and the 50 min of other EE material to Return of the King, why not follow through with an epilogue, and venture another 10 min to show how the saga FINALLY ended with the departure of the fellowship members?

I don't think ROTK needs ANOTHER ending.. it already has 5 or 6, which is 4 or 5 too many, depending...

Hmh, maybe we'll get some kind of "Definitive Cut" in 10-20 years on a next format.
Just like 'Blade Runner' for example... XD

I dont think I could take a definitive cut. Watching the extended versions take about a day god knows how long a definitive cut would take to watch.

I am not really clear on why this is such a big complaint among self professed fans of the series. If you've invested 12 hours watching this story, why not have a personal epilogue for all of the characters?

We're talking extended edition, so that people who are less involved with the series and satisfied with the TE would not be affected. And logically, what's wrong having a movie series that begins with a prologue end with an epilogue? Of course, none of this is going to happen, we're just throwing out concepts.
