I will wait for the EE. I know they will make a ton off of the TE but I wish a lot of people would hold out. My theory is if enough people hold out they won't try this stunt again but I know this will not happen. Most here have atleast 2 sets of this movie now and they want you to add a third and a fourth.

No double dip here as I can wait for the EE version.

Plenty of other releases to enjoy until 2011/2012, or whenever they are released. I can get by watching the upscaled DVD versions for now.

Double dip not necessary. The theatrical versions will do just fine. I collected the EE on DVD and while some of the additional content arguably were important, the majority of it detracted from the experience IMO.

I will be waiting for the extended cuts of The Lord of the Rings. It's the only way to watch the trilogy. Besides, Blu-ray is going to be the dominant format for a very very very long time. It's okay to be patient.

I've only seen the Two Towers EEs It will be hard to wait for the set to come out. Honestly, they say everyone has their price; if the TEs drop below $40 I will almost certainly get them and double dip for the EEs.

I hope you're right about it being dominant for a long time

I only have the extended editions on DVD. I think I prefer them, but it's been so long since I've seen the theatricals that it's difficult to remember all the differences. There are a couple of things in the EEs that I recall are improvements, but there's one added scene that definitely shouldn't have been added, IMO.

I have the BD pre-ordered.

No way will I double dip. Actually it will depend on the reveiws of the a/v quality whether I buy at all. ( yeah right these films look and sound great on dvd, I'll be buying ). Why not just release the set including both versions? I hate when studios play these games and then cry about copyright infringement. Games aside I'm looking forward to their release.

Seriously, you had to start a separate thread for this?

Just about any LOTR thread eventually turns to this debate, and it has completely overrun the "LOTR Trilogy in 2010" thread (or whatever its called).

So I find it funny one had to get started specifically for this and surprised one of the first dozen posts didnt point this out and shut it down or merge it.

Let the whining begin.

I'm waiting for the extended but if the theatricals drop to a reasonable price, I'll probably snag it up as well! I could see it going for $40 around BF.

I have no desire to buy anything but the complete versions.

I'm not a big fan of the films - I like them, but I have no need to shell out for the trunicated versions when we know the extended ones will be coming. I almost find it comical that they offer a "preview" of those editions on the forthcoming theatrical releases...way to rub it in! At least they are being honest, though, I suppose.

Technically I don't think it's right to call the EE's the "complete versions" since Peter Jackson has said that the theatrical versions are the definitive ones. However, I personally still prefer the EE's.

I think the theatrical versons are better for the second and third film and the extended version of the first film is my preffered version.

I'm definetly double dipping as I don't have the patience to wait another 18 months to get the EE editions.
I guess that a lot of people will change their mind over time IF they deliver a strong transfer! I could imagine that if they review it with a 4 stars Video & Audio that some just couldn't hold back anymore ...

Extended versions are the ones worth owning. I like to pretend the theatrical versions don't exist.

Hehe, I knew someone would say that.

IMHO, since the footage was all shot at the same time, and they intended on using it from the beginning, these are the more complete versions.

I understand the semantics, so to each their own on that account, but the sentiment remains - I won't buy 3/4 of a film when a longer version exists, so I'll be waiting for those releases before I spend a cent on these.
