I don't know what the hell I'm going to do. I really love this film and I'm already pissed that its not DTS MA and I'm pretty sure the EE'S will be DD TRU HD as well. So I'm just lost and don't know what the hell I'm going to do.

There will be like 2 million copies of the theatrical version going into landfills come a year later. What a waste.. It should be illegal for them to perform such an act.

Agree 100% with you on that.Lot's of consumers are crying about the music business loosing money and many going bust.Hopefully the movie industry will not go down that road as often as the recording industry

The response seems to be overwhelming in the tune of "Extended is better"

I haven't seen them all, and didn't really get into the ones I did..... I never read the books though, with the exception of the Silmarilillion or whatever it was called..... but I plan on buying these nonetheless, as I know many friends/family would probably enjoy seeing them on Blu-ray at our home.

I'm hoping the release of the Extended will go un-noticed by many (I'm talking about Joe-consumer, not the people on this forum, as people here actually seek out information, and not just browse retail aisles)

This way I can buy the theatrical versions cheaply on Half.com or Ebay, or at a local re-sale shop as soon as the Extendeds come out. If the price difference doesn't change much, then I'll just hold out on a sale to buy the Extended, but if the Theatrical is really cheap on the used market (likely) I'll just get those.

Default Any info on the transfer specs?

Although I want the Extended Editions, this will suffice for now. My main concern are the transfers? Anybody know what was done? 4K/8K scans....what did they do?

Blu-ray makes it possible to much more easily include both editions with seamless branching, and that would be the definitive version to own for many people.

The back cover specs say DTS-HD MA 6.1, so looks like the announced TrueHD 5.1 is WRONG This should be the case for the US release too.

I can't believe people are having such a vitriolic reaction to this. I understand that almost everyone loves the Extended Editions more, I do as well, but does the fact that the Theatrical Editions are being released first really surprise anyone? This is a business and they're going to try and make as much money as possible. Regardless of how many people say they won't be buying this set, it will sell fantastically. I sense a repeat of the Star Trek: Original Motion Picture box set fiasco...

Yeah, I agree.
Just look at the ratings on store-sites like Amazon and such,
the releases had been rammed down to "1 star" since they appeared on the sites months ago,
just out of principle.

I think that is just extremely childish, no matter who you are.
It's just a bunch of sheep following each other...
And so you ruin the rating of a product which might just be perfectly fine.
Only because most fanatics claim the extended versions are the "tr00 versions" and "the Theatricals are a ripoff".
Yes, I do agree it's like a "trick" from the business to milk out sales.
But most also go off at the release itself like it would be "crap" or something like that.
Only because they heard like "they're not the right version(s)".
I'm sorry, but it's pretty pathetic.

That's not to say you can't have a preference to which you want to have. (Which this topic is about.)
Just don't go bashing a product just because it's not the version you want.
And ESPECIALLY many months before anything is released...

Oh, and as for the sales, it will indeed sell well.
Because to start with there are many more regular consumers than most people on here.
You know, the people that just see the title, know it or have an interest and just buy it off the shelves.
Then it will also be the only version on BD out there for a good time and many people will want to see it.

The Amazon rating system is terrible. LOTR Blu-ray hasn't been released yet, therefore no one has seen it, therefore it is impossible to rate it! Nobody can review a product that doesn't exist yet. There shouldn't be any reviews there. Not one.

Add to that the fact that Amazon just dumps all reviews (from VHS to Blu-ray) together, and it's just a mess. Almost worthless.

I don't know if this was already covered in this post, I just don't have the time to read 170 pages of responses, but I think Target.com has their Lotr boxset labeled wrong.

Actual Wording..
"The Lord of the Rings: Motion Picture Trilogy (Extended) (9 Discs) (Includes Digital Copy) (Blu-ray)"

Can anyone confirm or deny this? I don't think there's any difference between their pre-order and anyone elses. I just wanted to bring that out so nobody would get duped into buying them thinking they where the extended versions, because they make it seem that way.

I can't imagine Target would have exclusive access to the EE and noone has heard about it until now. Not to mention the high improbability of releasing the EE simultaneously.

If you're rating the release based on the version of the film being included, then why would it matter if the discs aren't in production? You've seen the version of the film, and if that's what your review is commenting on, then it's valid.

What wouldn't make sense is for someone to try to rate the picture and sound quality of a product they haven't seen, as that can only be determined with the product in hand.

I sent Target and email asking whether the the Extended edition is indeed the version they will be selling or if they made an error. I'm very curious as to what the answer will be.

Yeah I'm like 99.9% sure the listing is wrong but could you imagine how many sales Target would make if it wasn't? And I didn't really plan on getting my hopes up anyway as personally, I kinda prefer the theatricals.

Does anyone know if they are three separate cases or just in one big box?
