Will gladly pick up the theatrical versions to hold me over, and then pick up the extended also.

Quite true.

Nice way to put it. I agree.

They did that with the DVD - a later re-release where both cuts are on two discs. It did not have the commentary tracks nor the DTS ES track due to lack of space. If they put two versions with seamless branching, the same problem is going to happen for the simple reason that there are so many scenes that were cut and scored differently.

I want optimum PQ and AQ on a BD50 or hopefully a BD75/100 when the EE comes out. For now, a BD50 for theatrical with lossless audio should work.

Ican understand reluctance by some to pay extra for two versions. But we are talking about what many people consider to be the greatest movies of all time that cost over $300 million and the efforts of thousands of people over five years to make. As a Tolkien fan, I have waited decades for these movies to be made. I consider the purchase costs of both the theatrical and extended versions to be an unbelievable bargain. It's not like we're talking about "Wild Hogs" or "Beerfest" here!

I'll probably pick up "Fellowship" on BluRay, as for some reason I do not yet own it on SD.

I thought the movies were good enough, but they didn't engross me as much as they did many other folks. I'm now past the stage in my life where I can justify spending money on every new release that comes out; most titles in my collection won't be getting upgraded to Blu unless they are physically damaged or I somehow find myself with money to burn

I was hoping they would release each movie (containing both theatrical and EE cut, but at a higher MSRP) every so many months until Hobbit is released in the theaters. I'm not sure they will maximize overall profits as they did with the DVDs since so many people prefer and will just wait for the EE versions.

They're spinning the double dip as a good thing. I won't buy it if I know they are going to release a different version later. Worst of wishes for whoever is making these decisions.

Well, as long as you know the extendeds are planned for later, you have the choice of not buying the version you don't want.

This is also pretty similar to the release scheme they used for the original DVDs. As long as they are open about it, I don't have any problem with it.

even if they don't say it, we can be sure we will have the Extended version later, probably in 2010

According to the Digital Bits, the Extended versions are supposed to come out in an "Ultimate" collection around the time of the Hobbit movies.

So much whining and widdle tantrums in this thread...
How can anyone who considers themselves a fan of the movies think it is a bad thing that instead of waiting two more years for ANY bit of LotR on blu that we will at least have something to hold us over.
While you people sit there complaining and whining, the rest of us will be enjoying the movies while still looking forward to the extended editions.

Hey! relax, some of us just prefer to wait for the Extended version, nothing wrong with that.

Can I make a suggestion, change to boxers, it seem you briefs are a little too tight and make you cranky..
