That brings up another thing I DON'T like about the EE of ROTK. I've mentioned it before. Tolkien would have hated Jackson having the Witch-King getting the best of Gandalf at the gates of Minas Tirith. That didn't happen in the books. There was a standoff but they both left for different reasons. Agmar-boy left because The Riders of Rohan had shown up to help Gondor so he left to go fight. Gandalf then left because he wanted to save Faramir from his insane father. Earlier, Gandalf went out and challenged ALL of the Ringwraiths when saving Faramir as Faramir was returning to Minas Tirith. The Ringwraiths fled from Gandalf as, in his wrath, lifted up his staff and some sort of energy struck one of the Ringwraith's flying creatures. Last edited by radagast; 03-14-2010 at 12:23 PM. |

Agree with Radagast. When the scene appeared with Gandalf and Pippin waiting in the courtyard to die, anyone near Tolkien's grave would have a heard a big groan coming from the vicinity of his casket. Of note is that, in the book, the quote that Gandalf uses to describe death ("a far green country") comes from a prophetic dream that Frodo had at Tom Bombadil's house. That vision was fulfilled when Frodo at last sailed to Elvenhome with Gandalf et al. after the Quest was completed.

Well, I never read the books much at all; in fact, I skimmed through "The Two Towers" once as a teen, but never actually read it. I do like the films, though, and to this day I think they're among some of the greatest filmic achievements ever done. New Line took a huge risk ($300 million, reportedly) in making them, and if they'd failed the studio would've gone into bankruptcy, or really close to it.
As for the Blu-Ray release, I'm waiting for the Extended Editions, since those are the ones I'm most familiar with. I saw "Fellowship" twice in theaters, "Towers" once, and missed "Return" completely. Ideally, I'd like to have everything from the EEs ported over to Blu-Ray, with the better picture and sound of course...but otherwise, there's not much else I'd want in the set. Maybe the music disc from the "Return" giftset, with composer Howard Shore... |
